Tiny giants.

cladonia lichen cups 2.jpg

Cladonia lichens are still my absolute favourite (even though I do like them all). Those tiny little cups in mint or grey colour are so nice to touch, that after every shoot I have to pet them a bit. I doubt they like it, some definitely don't... but I just can't resist the temptation.

The ones you see on the first two shots are probably the biggest ones I ever found. The more open one at the bottom of the photograph was probably 0.7 cm across. I know it is still a tiny thing, but for quite a bit for a lichen.
From a distance they could be easily mistaken for very, VERY small mushrooms.

Most of them I find growing on decaying branches, tree stumps, rocks or bricks covered in moss. Those were growing directly on the soil between mosses and pine needles.

And here is a nice bunch of them from a different location all mixed up with another lichen type that look like pieces of green algae.
