The act of speaking in tongues is a special gift from the holy spirit , ofcourse this was the promise fulfilled which was spoken by Jesus to his disciples and to an extend all that believed in his name.
according to the book of Acts 2 There was an instruction from Jesus to the disciples to tarry at the upper room for the holy spirit to decern on them, as we all know the Bible said the spirit decern on them like a tongue of fire rested on each of them and the spirit gave them utterance to speak and as they spoke others vegan to hear them.....
speaking in tongue is purely biblical, because it's the gift of the holy spirit, the Bible said he that speaking in an unknown tongue edifies his own self, and so the holy spirit helps us in that we know not what to pray he helps our infirmities....
while the disciples speak on other tongues others could hear the.lm and they marveled at such things cause these were gentiles, know this that the speaking in tongues and interpretation of tongues are both gift of the holy spirit, so that means one could speak in tongues and another could hear and also interpret that tongue.....
Speaking into tongue is quite a broad topic every Christian needs to understand quite WELL. S.I.T is not just about opening mouth and closing because we feel it's coming to our mouth that way. It's a gift and even when he promised to give us the gifts of the spirit, he didn't say it's a must you must have same with a friend or seat mate.
We've ended up turning S.I.T to the language of the babies that speaks gibberish when they're learning to speak with no specific meaning
Speaking in tongues is a gift to every believers. If you're not speaking, you're losing out. Reading mark 16:17, Jesus says that this signs that follow those that believe..they shall speak in new tongues. He didn't say it's for selected believers.

Yeah you said it rightly and I didn't say it's for selected believers as well. It is not a crime or tag of an unbeliever if there's a Christian who doesn't have the gift to speak in tongues. The Lord said these signs not All these signs must follow any individual. It was not recorded in the Bible that all the disciples aside the ones from Acts 2 spoke in tongues or they all get to heal the sick and raise the dead because they are gifts promised to us believers. Everyone with their diverse and distinct gifts as been given by the holy Spirit.
In this same Acts 2, it says that people hearing the disciples were saying that the disciples were speaking in their languages which means it is not just that they were just speaking something not meaningful because they want to. Like I said, it's a complex topic that everyone has interpreted in their own understanding and self-knowledge and i pray the Lord help us all to set things right
thanks very much for that, this is actually a very broad topic of concern to the modern day Christian body, I recall the scriptures telling us that he that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifies himself, it's a totally different experience when the unction comes on you, I get it that many believers are just doing what they don't know cause they lack understanding.... but if a believer truly express this gift and ability then its a genuine experience altogether...

Exactly it's different when it's a gift and unction from above and it's different when you are not given the gift but decided to just say something by force because you love someone's gift of tongues and not focusing on your own distinct gifts.
