Polygamy is one of those topics that gets people talking, especially when looking at it from a biblical point of view. In the Old Testament, we see men like Abraham, Jacob, and David having multiple wives. God didn’t strike them down for it, which makes it clear that He allowed it at the time. But allowing something doesn’t always mean He approved of it. It was more of a cultural practice that God tolerated, not what He originally intended for marriage.
If we go back to the very beginning in Genesis, God’s design for marriage was clearly between one man and one woman. Genesis 2:24 says a man will leave his parents and be joined to his wife singular, not wives. Jesus later confirms this in the New Testament, showing that God’s ideal plan was always one-on-one. The Apostle Paul also backed this up, especially when he mentioned that church leaders should be "the husband of one wife." That alone tells us a lot about what God expects from marriage today.
So, does God allow polygamy? Yes, in the past, but it was never His best for us. As time went on, God’s Word pushed people back toward His original design for marriage faithful, loving, and committed to one person. Christians today are encouraged to follow that standard because it reflects the kind of relationship God wants to have with us: loyal, personal, and full of love.
