Growing Deeper Relationship With God Through Prayers

Source

Prayer is a vital part of the Christian faith, as it allows us to connect with God and deepen our relationship with Him. But for many of us, prayer can feel like a chore or a ritual, rather than a meaningful conversation with the creator of the universe. It is through prayer that we are able to express our gratitude, ask for forgiveness, and seek guidance in our daily lives and build a relationship with God.

In the Bible, Jesus teaches us the importance of prayer, saying, "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you" (Matthew 6:6). This verse teaches us the importance of privacy and intimacy in prayer, as we are to come before God with a sincere and open heart.

To make us further understand the importance of prayer we should remember that the Bible records several instances of Jesus praying in various locations. Some examples include:

  • item3In the Garden of Gethsemane before his arrest, trial, and crucifixion. Here, Jesus is recorded as praying to God the Father, asking that the cup of suffering be taken away from him, yet ultimately submitting to God's will (Matthew 26:36-46, Mark 14:32-42, Luke 22:39-46).

  • On a mountain before He selected the 12 apostles. Here, Jesus is recorded as praying all night (Luke 6:12-13).

  • In the wilderness, when He was tempted by Satan. Jesus is recorded as having fasted for 40 days and nights before Satan came to tempt him and Jesus answered Satan's temptations with scriptures (Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13).

  • On the cross, Jesus prays for his executioners, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34).

  • After his resurrection, Jesus is recorded as appearing to his disciples and talking with them, and also praying with them (John 20:19-23, Luke 24:50-53)

These examples illustrate that Jesus prayed in a variety of settings, and that prayer was an important and consistent part of his life. So if prayer can be an important part of Jesus life why shouldn't it be an important part of ours.

One way to deepen our relationship with God through prayer is to make it a consistent part of our daily routine. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, we are told to "pray without ceasing." This doesn't mean that we must constantly be on our knees, but it does mean that prayer should be a constant part of our thoughts and actions. We can make this happen by setting aside specific times during the day to pray, such as upon waking, before meals, and before bed. We can also make an effort to incorporate prayer into our daily activities, such as praying while driving or doing household chores. By making prayer a regular part of our daily routine, we can make it easier to develop a deeper relationship with God.

When we go to God in prayers try as much as we can to be specific and intentional in our prayers. We can do this by taking the time to understand what we are really asking for, and why we are asking for it. In James 4:2-3, we are told, "You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures." This verse teaches us that we need to be honest with ourselves and with God about our intentions and desires. We should also be specific about what we are asking for, as it's much easier to discern whether or not our prayers have been answered.

Also we should endeavor to make it a part of our worship. In John 4:24, Jesus teaches us that "God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." This verse emphasizes the importance of being genuine in our worship and prayer. Worship is not just singing songs, but it's a way to connect with God and offer our entire self to Him. When we worship, we should be present in the moment, and be fully focused on God. Through worship, we can deepen our relationship with God, as we are offering ourselves fully to Him.

Prayer is also a way to deepen our relationship with God by reading and meditating on His word. In Psalm 119:105 it says "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." The Bible is not just a book of stories or teachings, it's the word of God. By reading and meditating on the Bible, we can gain a deeper understanding of who God is and how He wants us to live. We can also gain insight into our own hearts and be challenged to make necessary changes.

To deepen our relationship with God through prayer, we must be willing to listen James 1:19, we are told to "be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry." In prayer, we often focus on telling God what we want, but we should also take time to listen to what He has to say. This can be done by being still and quiet before Him, and by paying attention to the
