WHile I agree that Christians are called in the New Testament to give, both to the church and to the needy, I am curious what scripture you base your claim that "The principle of giving the 10% of one's income to God as a sign of trust and obedience, is a new testament principle." Could you please provide the reference for that?

That makes sense. So, let me ask this. While it is listed in the Old Testament, and while Jesus did teach on giving, how do you account for the fact that tithing, specifically, was not taught in the New Testament (not even by Jesus, Himself)?
