It is definitely not enough to get closer to God by praying only. There are a lot of factors that should be considered when trying to build an effective relationship with God and as much as prayer stands out, work also plays a huge role. Philippians 2:12b says "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling".
Getting close to God means you would have to always obey His instructions as He speaks to you. Getting close to God means you'd have to drop every form of compromise that hinders you from effectively follow Him. Getting close to God means you would have to love Him, the church and be willing to make sacrifices.
Take that step, make that effort, study His Word more and don't ever give up on following Him diligently. Search for opportunities to praise Him and in all when God does good things for you don't ever take the glory for it. See it as an opportunity given to you by God to do what you can and constantly ascribing all Glory to God would condition your mind to rely more on Him and definitely you would see Him come through for you in all areas.
Prayer alone cannot draw us closer to God, but we can be closer to God by praying and obeying his commandments.
