MCGI Topic Review | How do we understand the Bible?

One of the greatest things that a Christian can undertake is understanding the Bible. The Bible is not a book; it is a Word of God, and he was writing to teach, correct and guide us. The more I dwelled on this subject the more I came to the realization that I needed to be humble, patient and willing to know God more to understand the Bible. According to 2 Timothy 3: 16 of the bible, All scripture is given by inspiration of God, which implies that there is no part of the bible that lacks a message that is given by God.

The initial point towards the Bible is to go to it with a humble heart. I have also been taught that when I come with my own opinions, I will not be able to catch what God really wants to say. In James chapter 1 verse 5, it is stated that he who lacks wisdom is supposed to seek God. This makes me remember that I cannot interpret the bible using my strength; I require the assistance of God. On numerous occasions, as I read a passage I stop to pray and ask God to open my eyes. This is a very basic thing that has made me realize other hidden meanings that I had not realized before.

Reading the bible slowly and carefully is another key way of understanding the bible. The Word of God is abundant and provides a strong message even in some cases with one verse. The Bible says, in Psalms 119: 105, that Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. This implies that the Bible should be taken step by step. I am in a hurry reading it and then I miss the light that it gives. However, when I slow down and meditate and compare scriptures with each other, the message becomes much clearer.

Also, it becomes easier to comprehend Bible when I listen to true teachers of the Word of God. Teachers are used by God to clarify and explain things that appear challenging. According to Rom.10:17, faith is achieved through hearing, hearing is achieved through the word of God. A mere explanation given to me by my teacher makes me comprehend an uncomprehensible verse that I had been grappling with days before.

Lastly, obedience is an important aspect of the interpretation of the Bible. In John 7: 17, Jesus said that whoever desires to do the will of God will know His doctrine. This is because we gain knowledge with what we read. When I use the teachings of the bible in my day to day life, the message becomes more tangible and easier to understand.

To sum it up, reading the bible is a process that entails praying, humility, close study and obedience. The larger the amount of time I devote to the Word of God, reading and contemplating it, the greater the amount of light I obtain. On the guidance of God, anyone can interpret the scriptures and develop spiritually on its assistance.
