In today's teaching, we learn the importance of love and how it is expected of every believer to live a life of love. God loved us all. He wants to do the same to people around us. Our nature as Christians should be a nature that possesses love. If we don't love, that means we don't know God because God Himself is love.
While Jesus was on earth He walked in love. All the people He liberated and lives that He changed was done out of love. Even to when persecuted, He never displayed a nature of hatred for once. Even down to the moment He was on the cross for a crime He did not commit, and was being maltreated by the same people He came to die for, His heart was still void of hate.
Matthew 5:44 - But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you
It doesn't really make sense to love our enemies; people who hate and despite us for no just reason. But Jesus said we should love them. With Jesus, love has no barrier. We are told of a popular verse in the bible of how God loved the whole world that made Him send His only begotten son for their sake. But in our world today, we choose who to love and who not to love.
This is not the way God wants us to live. Our love should be shown to all men.
Luke 6:35 - But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
Our love should be unconditional; regardless of the person we are showing it to. We should not love only when it is beneficial to us; expecting something in return. Such an act does not portray genuine love. Love is a selfless act. Our intent of love should be for the benefit of those we are showing it to and not for us.
