Genesis 2:16-17 KJV
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: [17] But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
From assumption we can say that the garden of Eden is an hectares of land, with all manners of edible fruits. And God commanded them to eat of all the fruits of every trees except one.
They were told they can freely eat of every tree, very good fruits and even the tree it self, the bark, the leaves and the shoot. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. God gave us Adam free will to decide what he want. God never coarse him in to obedience. Although every man's sins has consequences, disobedience can't go unpunished.
Man is a free moral agent who can choose either to be obedient to God or to be disobedient to Him. We have the power to choose what we want. The punishment of sin is a show of God's love towards humanity. It shows that God will not let us destroy ourselves.
This scripture here also expressed the love of God towards humanity and the consequence of defying the command of God by choosing the path of disobedience.
