Time to grow some roots

I have talked a lot about the grafts I am doing, I also talked about the grafting rootstock I am using, but I have not talked about what I do with the upper part of the grafting rootstock, that part that I cut to be able to do the job, after some days waiting for the wound to heal, today was the moment to put them in the ground to root again and continue using them.

What do I need? Obviously a good pot, I decided to use this plastic container, made some holes for water drainage and it is ready to be used.

As we can see it is well healed, and these are all the Myrtillocactus that I am going to root.

I use a lot of tepojal which is nothing more than pumice stone, I use three sizes for the different layers that I add in the pot, in the lower part I use the biggest parts.

Here we can see the difference in size compared to the second layer.

This is what my pot looks like with the third and second layer, I do it this way to fill the pot.

IMG_20221204_142957.jpg

This is the size I use for my main layer where the roots will go and where I expect them to grow the most.

IMG_20221204_143122.jpg

I use nine parts of this size, half part of worm castings and half part of coconut husk,

Once mixed this is what it looks like, it is a really good mix if you want to try it someday.

IMG_20221204_143450.jpg

Time to fill the pot and start planting.

IMG_20221204_143629.jpg

I place the cactus without digging in, just enough so that they don't go sideways.

IMG_20221204_143841.jpg

I ran out of the stone I use for decoration, so I put a layer of the tepojal I use for the second layer, I just want to create some body in the pot.

IMG_20221204_144043.jpg

And that's all, it only remains to water, put in an illuminated place without direct sunlight and wait for the roots to come out in the pot, once there are new roots I will have to get the cactus used to the sun again.

Something I also want to talk about is this cactus, I bought it a few months ago and unfortunately it was sick from the nursery so after a few weeks it started to die, I was able to rescue a small pup and after many months of waiting this is the size it has reached.

IMG_20221204_145021.jpg

By the way, I can see it will give me its first flower so that makes me feel good.

IMG_20221204_144912.jpg

A couple of weeks ago I bought this cactus that must be a wilcoxia poselgeri or some similar species, it is about half a meter high and as an experiment I cut the upper part, which is already healed and with many new shoots as you can see.

IMG_20221204_145630.jpg

I grafted the upper part on pereskiopsis with no results so far, it doesn't grow or give buds, but it hasn't died either so I'll keep waiting.

IMG_20221204_145815.jpg

Now the experiment, I cut a second part and grafted it on pereskiopsis, this time we can see growth.

IMG_20221204_145743.jpg

Another experiment but now on hylocereus, besides I decided to do the grafting this way because I hope that the Digitostigma caput medusae seeds I sowed start to grow and this is the way the tubers are grafted, good experiment and we see growth.

IMG_20221204_145831.jpg

Same story with a smaller piece and on echinopsis, basically I can graft on anything haha.

IMG_20221204_145929.jpg

And to end the post this beautiful mammillaria, I cut a few pups from the main plant, still had no roots but began to give flowers like crazy, I guess that's what happens when they feel they are going to die and want to ensure the survival of the species, for me it is a visual show, for them something a little stressful, but don't worry, they are fine and have already begun to grow roots, this is all for the moment, see you later.

Good job. I'm learning, even if I am scared to attempt the grafting

At the beginning I was also scared to do the grafting, mainly because I had few plants and the seeds I sowed were not enough, now that I have sown many I am not really worried so much and just at this moment I am waiting for some asterias seeds more special than the ones I have sown previously, so what I have done so far has been a training for what is coming, when everything is ready it will be the moment to share it with the community.

Amazing. You have a wholesome relationship with your garden and plant. I love the way you take special care to make sure that everything is in place for it to grow effectively

Plants are living beings and although it may seem horrible to cut them to make grafts, the truth is that it is a way to accelerate their growth and reproduction, it is necessary for their conservation for example, I love my garden mainly because I enjoy it but also because it is my place of relaxation, besides I love to take pictures of cactus.

And I love this!!! You take care of them as though they were a child, making decisions that will help them grow even though it might seem horrible at the beginning.

I am glad it's more than just planting cactus for you, you relax and take photos too.

Thank you.
