About Boat Traveling in Bangladesh

It will be difficult to find people here in Bangladesh who has not traveled by boat here occasionally or traveling. Bangladesh is a beautiful land with a lot of rivers. There is some man made and natural lake as well. You will find even a big number of Haor (Haor means which is covered by water in Rainy season for 5-7 months, and rest of the time water less farmable fertile land). Couple of decades ago, the main transport of the most of the people was boat. In the village area and haor area, almost each and every family had at least a boat. Being this situation boat travelling and swimming is very common. But with the change of global climate and warming, a huge and radical change has been happened in the natural environment thus in the life style. The overall lifestyle has been changed dramatically over night in the line of climate change. Now, its difficult to find boat even in the haor and village area. Boat is existed in only some route where launch and ship is the vehicle of transports. Only the southern district people use this water vehicles to travel otherwise you will find a lot of children and kids not even saw a water vehicle in his/her life. So, you can imagine how the situation and environment is changing. Most of the rivers become dry to knee height level in summer. In consequence, road and train become the main and first priority transport day by day. Purchasing power has been increased also, thus air transport has become popular as well.

My Traveling Experience

Kaptai lake is the largest lake in Bangladesh surrounded with two hilly districts. To make the only hydro-electric power plant in Bangladesh, a Dam has been set up in 1956 thus the lake is formed automatically. A huge area of farming land went under water beside the hilly areas. The lake become a huge tourist place. There are more than 20 picnic spots around the lake. People choose anyone they like most. They travel form one place to another by boat using any one of the picnic spots.

We started our journey after lunch from the Lake Shore bank (spot) of Bangladesh Army. We were six in numbers. All of us were colleagues. We went there to attend a community picnic. After having lunch and program, we have bought a boat which is run by engine. There was an old man who was the guide of the boat (and sailor as well). After bargaining for a while, we was able to manage this boat for an hour by about 15 USD. The contact was to reach us to the Dam area by 30-35 minutes then get back again. As you can see, how close we were to the Dam (of hydroelectric power plant) area.

When the boat passed the front area of the lake to the narrow passage of the lake, we observed wonderful scenario around us. It was very calm with a few boats of tourist. Boat was running in between the different hills which is very charming to watch. The weather was windy having hot sun. So we did not bother to come out of shelter of boat to the yard. We captured some photography of us and this beautiful place which we have not experienced ever. We have taken some clicks of the dam while close to the Hydro electric plant. We saw some beautiful birds and animals nearby there. In the hilly part, there were some tribe living on the hills. Their lifestyle is very much different from ours. They lead very hard-working life there because of transport facility. Boat is the only way to travel from one place to another or one house to another. Thus, they can’t lead very luxurious life. They need to work hard for their survival. Fishing is the most common job of them. We felt sorrow for them. There are some schools as well but the kids also need to go there by boat. In return we have seen the sun set and some beautiful birds going back to the nest. Sky was very clear then. It’s a memorable experience of our life obviously.

Here are some clicks while passing by the lake. Very charming looking area.
