Red Hill — Hive

The hill was once really beautiful! I just saw old photos of this place, when on the high, even rocky, coast there was no forest and houses in the village were visible from afar. And also the view from the village from a high height was simply amazing! I dare even call this place on the Sukhona the most unique and beautiful along the entire length of the whole river. And it is called Opoki.

The village of Krasnaya Gora (Red Hill, where "red" means "beautiful" in ancient russian) has long been abandoned. At the turn of the new millennium, there was no longer a permanent population.

The village belongs to the Opoki rural settlement of the Veliky Ustyug district of the Vologda region of Russia and stands on the bank of the Sukhona River, at the site of one of the sharpest turns, where the highest and steepest banks are located.

In summer, you can only get here by boat from the other side of the river, where the residential village of Porog (Threshold) is located.

And in winter, a winter road was laid through the village to a fountain spring.

Houses on Sukhona have always been distinguished by their impressive size and rich appearance.

In one of the houses there is a painted Russian stove.

In general, very few buildings have survived here.

In different years, the road to the fountain passes in different places. Sometimes, the road is made bypassing the village, but this year the passage is carried out along the former street.

This is done in order not to make a sharp turn at the exit from a steep rise, because not all cars cope with this obstacle.

Before this village there was never a car road. Only during the development of forestry (in simple words, felling and removal of timber), winter roads were laid in this direction.
