Little-known Greece

in TravelFeed5 months ago

This story is about my unforgettable experiences in Greece. Over the past few months, I had the opportunity to travel to a lesser-known town in northern Greece, called Serres. Despite not being a popular tourist destination, Serres offered a glimpse into the authentic Greek way of life, complete with traditional bougatsi - a delightful pastry filled with cream or cheese. The locals also take great pride in their coffee culture, particularly their love for frappe and the art of preparing Greek coffee. Sitting at the charming cafes, observing people engaged in leisurely conversations while enjoying their coffee, was a truly fascinating experience.
The Greek people have their own unique rhythm of life, with distinct working hours and leisure times. Their fondness for coffee is apparent as they enjoy it throughout the day, and they typically have dinner after 8 pm. Similar to us, Bulgarians, and Greeks cherish food and socializing during meals. Personally, I was captivated by the diverse seafood offerings and the exquisite preparation of calamari and shrimp. While the prevalence of fried food in restaurants was not my preference, I must admit that the flavours were truly delightful. Furthermore, the love for bread and cheese is evident in their culinary traditions. I distinctly recall savouring the delectable baked feta during my last visit. One encouraging trend in restaurants and coffee shops is the thoughtful gesture of offering complimentary water. As soon as guests are seated, they are presented with a revitalizing bottle of water, reminding them to stay hydrated.

Most of the local taverns in Serres are open every day, albeit with evening hours starting after 6 pm. It was surprising to find that English was rarely spoken, and there were no English menus available. However, some local taverns, like Roxani, offer online menus. All that needs to be done is to scan the QR code.

Ultimately, it was the warm hospitality that left the most lasting impression, with all other aspects being viewed as extras.

In conclusion, Greece extends a warm invitation to all visitors. Having explored both tourist hotspots and off-the-beaten-path gems, I can attest that every corner holds its own unique charm and excitement. Embracing these diverse and enriching experiences has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on my heart.
