The "Day of the Dead" celebration began, and many relatives living in the community gathered at the cabin attached to the side of the ranch. The taste of the meal and the many people who had gathered, such as stewed papaya prepared by my mother since the morning and rabbit meat prepared by my friend, was exceptional and a good memory. While playing chess with my friend's nephew-in-law, he learned English, and I learned some simple Spanish.

It was a celebration that clearly showed the family ties that Mexicans cherish. This "Day of the Dead" is a festival to make offerings to ancestors and for the dead souls, and the culture says that the souls of the dead return to our living world on this day, and the souls of the dead spend time together. This culture is really similar to the Japanese Obon celebration, and I felt that the ancestor worship in Mexico is very similar to what we do in Japan. This idea of ancestor worship strengthens the bonds of family and relatives, and it reminded me of my own childhood memories of going back to my parent's house to greet my relatives and spend Obon with them.

After our feast, we were really full and decided to go for a little after-dinner walk. My friend's in-laws run a very large piece of land as a ranch. It is a really large area, and in the past there used to be a lot more trees than there are now, and they have cleared the land little by little until it looks like it does today. My friend's niece and nephew took me to a large ranch behind their cabin. It was a little hilly, and we climbed it together. My friend's niece picked some beautiful flowers to show me. As we all climbed the hill together, the sun began to tilt slightly to the west, changing the color of the sunset every second. It was truly a beautiful sunset and one of my best memories.

While running this ranch, my friend is also considering building a shelter for shelter dogs on this large piece of land. Listening to my friend's dream, I rediscovered how he has been making steady progress toward his big dream little by little, as he has been doing since his student days, and I wanted to support him so that his dream will come true someday. In Mexico, the concept of pets has not yet taken root, and the streets are filled with stray dogs. Many times, I saw dogs that were sick, and hungry, and I saw dogs that were so hungry and were so skinny. It was a wonderful dream for me to imagine such dogs running free in this large land, running a shelter for shelter dogs that my friend is thinking of. As I looked at this large piece of land, I vividly remember thinking, "I wish I could do something to help others by fulfilling my own dream."
