Merriwa and it's Silo Art, New South Wales, Australia.

in TravelFeed24 days ago

We were traveling from Coonabarabran in the country to Central coast of New South Wales late last year. There was a few possible routes to choose from but when I saw some silo art marked on google maps about half way, it made up my mind that this would be the perfect place for a bit of a lunch break. I had never been there before, it was a bigger place than I was expecting as it is also half way between Dubbo and Newcastle another couple of bigger New South Wales towns on a different coast to inland route. Merriwa is a aboriginal word meaning grass seeds and the country side is definitely very farm looking with lots of rolling grassy hills.

The main street was very neat and tidy and there were plenty of food options. It was pretty hot and quite in the middle of the day.

Other than the Silos it is very near the Goulburn River National Park but there was no time for a visit today. We have done a great short walk there I posted about on another trip. https://travelfeed.com/@new.things/barrington-coast-and-the-dripping-walk-ulan-nsw

The sheep with red socks is all about the sponsor of the Festival of Fleece, I suppose someone had to pay for all the painting on the silos it would not be cheap.

We had a bit of a walk around town after lunch to stretch the legs. I enjoy getting a look at what it was like in the old days.

It is amazing what you can do with a bit of old rusty corrugated roofing iron.

I remember that meal! It was delicious !LOL

Meanwhile, I think it was @galenkp that put us onto the Silo Art. (Thanks, Galen! I'm pretty sure I saved the map you shared aaaaaaages ago knowing that at some point we'd be able to pick some of them up! Have you seen this one with the sheep?)

I've not seen this sheep silo art in person but it's a ripper huh? I'm a bit of a silo art nerd to be honest and am always on the look out for new ones. It's a hike from where I am but when I do my big lap I'll have the time to go wherever I choose and will definitely be chasing down some silo art.

Definitely very cool. As someone who doesn't consider herself artistic, I am always in awe when I see massive artworks and wonder how they could even imagine something that big in the first place, let alone work out how to accurately paint it at scale.

Yeah, indeed it's a nice way to add some colour to a small town and some interest which hopefully brings some much-needed income.

As for the lap, I'm not broadcasting it on the internet but soon enough, and yet, not soon enough.

Oh! And your big lap! Brad told me you were doing this. How fun! How soon is that happening?
