Bush or wild camping in Finland

in TravelFeed19 days ago

Firstly, after our experience in France 🇫🇷 when someone tried breaking in while we slept, wild camping in Finland is very safe.

Generally, you can pull over anywhere without being disturbed or broken into. This of course doesn't mean that you will have a 100% guarantee, but the crime rate is very low which means for the nomadic traveller you are safe to enjoy the Finnish countryside.

However, there are a few rules you should consider.

  1. You should not be in seeing distance of someone's home. (Unless it is a public parking space)
  2. You shouldn't park your mobile home in front of someone's access gate.
  3. Respect the local environment by taking your rubbish with you when you leave.
  4. Respect the peace, because creating a lot of noise will get someone call the police.
  5. Many Finns have summer cottages, so avoid camping next to them.
  6. Do not light a fire in the forest while camping.

Our own experience

When we returned from Kokkola, Finland we decided to stop somewhere for the night.

We found a nice spot on our route just after Hartola next to a lake. Of course, this is not unusual in Finland, there are many places like this all over Finland.

It was very quiet apart from the noise from the traffic and we could hear the birds and other creatures mostoftheevening. I personally slept well and woke up refreshed and well.

There was even a Puu-Cee a few metres away which for those who don't know is an old fashion toilet. It uses sawdust instead of water.

As you can see the parking was very easy.

In conclusion,  we had a safe and quiet sleep. After our morning coffee and walking the dog 🐕 we headed to Heinola for breakfast.
