Okay, so hear me out—there’s this place I’ve been dreaming of, and it’s called Zanzibar. Even the name has a cool ring to it, right? Fun fact: the word Zanzibar is actually Swahili and it loosely means “the land of the blacks” or “the coast where black people live.” It already sounds rich in culture—and yes, I’m totally obsessed.
Way back in the first century (like, seriously ancient times), traders from the Arabian Peninsula, the Persian Gulf (modern-day Iran), and West India were already vibing there. So yeah, Zanzibar has been that girl for a longgg time.
Now, why do I want to go so badly? Let me tell you three reasons that made me fall in love—even from afar:
Nakupenda Beach Nature Reserve
First of all, the name Nakupenda means “I love you” in Swahili. Like, how romantic is that? This beach is giving everything—white sand, crystal clear waters, and vibes for days. Perfect for snorkeling, sunbathing, or just eating fresh seafood while pretending you don’t have any responsibilities (because that’s the energy I’m bringing).
It’s the kind of place where you can take those effortless “I didn’t even try but still cute” beach pics. And let’s not even talk about the marine life—colorful fish, coral, all of it. I already see myself there.
The Old Slave Market
Okay, switching gears a bit. I’m really drawn to places with history—especially stories about where we as Africans come from, what we went through, and how far we’ve come. The Old Slave Market in Zanzibar holds a powerful story about the East African Slave Trade. It's heavy, yes, but important.
There’s something about standing in places where history actually happened. It’s humbling. Emotional. Eye-opening. I know it’s not your typical touristy vibe, but it’s one I definitely want to experience and learn from.
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park
Now, if you know me, you know I love nature. Like, give me a forest trail over a shopping mall any day. This park? Ugh, so beautiful. It’s home to the red colobus monkeys (they’re cute, trust me), and the whole area has this chill, untouched vibe. There’s even a mangrove swamp, and I don’t know why—but that just sounds so cool to walk through.
I imagine myself just wandering through, hearing the birds, lowkey pretending I’m on some National Geographic adventure. It’s giving peace, clarity, and a little sprinkle of adventure.
So yeah… if you’re ever thinking of where to go in East Africa, Zanzibar is seriously THAT place. Whether you're a beach bum, a history lover, or a nature baby like me—it has something for your soul.
One day, I’ll go. And when I do, you best believe I’ll be posting like crazy.
Until then… Zanzibar lives rent-free in my heart.
