Mexican Murals - Football Heroes Around an Urban Field [CCC's Street Art Contest #123]

in StreetArtlast year

After an extraordinary scheduled World Cup has been concluded, and the year has reached its last few days, football season should be considered definitely over. Time to create a football related street art post!

On the edge of the multistory urban highway Anillo Periférico, on the corner of Gral. Méndez and Gral. José Morán in Mexico City's Amp. Daniel Garza neighborhood, there is small football field. Even though it's technically outdoor, its size suggests that it's more for the indoor variety of soccer.

The winding streets, overpasses, on- and off ramps to this massive artery of city traffic don't exactly offer the most romantic backdrop to a foottie game or practice, so they brought in someone to decorate the walls with football related imagery.

Honestly, I have no idea who any of these people are. They may be Mexican soccer gods of national or maybe even international fame. If you're knowledgeable about the sport you may even recognize them. Or, they could be local football legends, stars from the neighborhood who have actually scored goal themselves right on this little field. In fact, I would much prefer this than seeing the same old faces (which I don't recognize anyway, so it doesn't really matter).

Unfortunately, I can say the same thing about the artist too. As hard as I searched, I could not make out a tag or a signature, or any other identifying feature, other than the obvious sponsors. Never mind, simply the fact that in Mexico you simply can't have a wall without any corresponding murals on it, is a nice thing to appreciate in and of itself.

This post is my entry for this week's CCC Street Art Contest. Take a look at this weekly contest, and if you have any good street art pics of your own, submit them to win cool prizes. If you are interested in seeing more Mexican wall paintings, visit my ongoing blog series Mexican Murals.

So do people stab each other arguing over which team they prefer in Mexico? (happens in Chile haha)

Sure, bar brawls can easily get out of hand and they erupt for the stupidest reasons. Football is an ideal candidate since so many people follow it so passionately. Interestingly, certain clubs also attract fans from a certain background.

Mexico City's working class like to support Cruz Azul, intellectuals tend to favor the UNAM's Pumas, and the fans of America are (stereo)typically what are known as nacos: low income hustler and wannabe gangster types, who may even be proud of their lack of education or social finesse. So a brawl with America fans I can certainly imagine ending up bloody.

Very similar, here there are three main teams as well being Colo Colo the working class and Universidad de Chile preferred by those of higher income. Universidad Católica is for the intellectual. However, there's a lot of gangsterism on both Colo Colo and Universidad de Chile and that confrontation leads to the bloody brawls.

Hahahaha! Interesting! Kinda cool to discover these interesting aspects of something that ultimately doesn't interest me. 😜

Haha! but it does, if only as a cultural phenomenon, otherwise you wouldn't have posted about it 🤔 Either way, looking forward to some building post of yours, those are very interesting

YES!!! I also want to make some building posts! In fact, I really hope to get into building something to post about. It's about time!

Cool work, perfect for a football field and necessary to forget the immediate environment 😀 Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.
