Mexican Murals - Prehispanic Art on a Tulum Hostel [CCC's Street Art Contest #38]

in StreetArt3 years ago (edited)

It's been a good two weeks since I came back from our few days of vacation on the Caribbean coast, and I'm still going through the mural photos I took there. And why not? After all, the competition at the Weekly Street Art Contest by @creativecoin has become really active. So sure, I'll keep sharing the pics I took on the Rivera Maya.

As I said, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum are covered in murals, over and over. So much so, that after a while a mural has to be really impressive, or gigantic, or ideally both, to even motivate me to take a picture. That was the case with this piece: huge, colorful, captivating imagery, and probably new, as the pain was hardly touched by the sun.

Tulum is not very big, even though it's worlds apart from the insignificant little town next to the archeological site on the beach, I got to know fifteen years ago. Still, it's not too hard to get lost, especially with so many murals all forming natural markers.

This wall painting can be seen on the Hostel Malakai, located on Calle 2 Poniente, between Alfa Norte and Júpiter Norte. It features authentic looking precolombian images, though this time I'm not very sure about the symbolism. To me it looks like a jaguar warrior on his knees... digging a hole? There are also two birds present, one sitting on his shoulder, the other one coming out of the hole he dug.

The front facade of the hostel continues with more prehespanic images. On the bottom a priest is burning copal, a resin with a pleasant smell, used often in rituals. On the above section a few deities are lined up between two jaguars.

The artist of this work is mentioned in the upper left corner of the first mural as Metzican, whose art can be found not only on walls, but on cup holders and backpacks.

Great mural for this hostel... The competition starts to be hard for the contest hosted by @digi-me but cool to see Street Art from all around the World.

Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.

Thank you. And I guess that was the idea originally, to have many people participate, right? Congrats on achieving this! :-)
