I think you didn't interpret it well or maybe it was me who didn't explain it well.
I understand that Carlos is already dead, but his body is in pieces and that's why they couldn't give him a burial.
They wanted to recover Carlos' Machete to use it to bury him in Carlos' name.

And what I mean is that it was a risky thing to face so many soldiers just to recover a Machete, although I can understand that this Machete had a sentimental value since it belonged to Carlos. That was why they wanted to recover it, to use it in Carlos' place and give it a holy burial in his honor.
