Fictional worlds depicted in video games can be really vast but, fortunately for the players and the protagonists, most titles offer faster and more comfortable options than just walking. From bicycles and horses to trains and ships, gamers get many chances to ride fast, wild and free. In this entry to the weekly contest hosted by the Gaming Photography community, I'm going to present some of the most splendid means of transportation I've enjoyed in my favourite games. Let's ride!

The plane may be Italian but it sure does look like Swiss cheese. During one of my bombing sorties in War Thunder, my B.R. 20RD plane was taken by surprise by a particularly nasty British fighter. The perfidious son of Albion turned out to be quite skilled at shooting and soon enough my bomber went down to the ground, with the first pilot bleeding to death after being perforated by enemy fire.
Life in post-apocalyptic Moscow as shown in Metro 2033 is harsh, brutal, and usually too short, but it has one boon: cool cars. The beauty shown in the pic belongs to the Spartan Order, an elite group of battle-hardened soldiers fighting for the survival of the people still remaining in the Moscow metro tunnels. The Spartans are quite nice and even offer a ride to the protagonist, Artyom...
...but the view from inside is rather disappointing. And yet, the ramshackle buggy is one of my favourite video game rides.
If you thought that the ramshackle Metro combat car was in bad shape, here's something even better. The indie game Jalopy puts the player into the Trabant, the (barely) living legend of the East German auto industry, and lets them travel through Eastern Europe during the period of transformation from the failed communist system. It stinks, it smokes, it threatens to fall apart at every turn — what a lovely car!
Cars are fine but how about hopping onto a rugged two-wheeled ride? Ben Throttle, the protagonist of Lucas Arts' classic adventure Full Throttle, mounts this absolute beast of a Harley bike equipped with absurd exhaust pipes.
Sadly, early in the game some sneaky bastards sabotage Ben's motorbike. The results, quite painful for our hero, are visible on the screenshots. Things could be much worse, though. Ben not only survives the attempt to kill him but finds a fine mechanic who'll repair the bike — and become the love of his life.
Jacket, the main protagonist of Hotline Miami, rides a gorgeous, classic 1980s muscle car. Sadly, the psychotic murderers he meets in the game do not appreciate automobile beauty and the car gets one beating after another. Needless to say, sooner or later those car-hating barbarians get what they deserve, in ultraviolence style.
Speaking of classic cars, Huntdown also offers the opportunity to drive one. It's in a much better shape than Jacket's ride but the paint on the hood is scratched off. Not because our bounty hunter is a bad driver, it's just that he usually starts a mission by ramming through a few gang members
Meet Karlito, perhaps the weirdest vehicle available in Far Cry 6. This is what happens to a tank after it gets captured by dysfunctional anarchists. But hey, at least it drives and shoots just fine.
What to do when the Kaiser and his mustache-twirling have invaded France and you desperately need to deliver troops from Paris to the frontline? That's easy, you grab the nearest taxi, tell the boys in blue and red to hop in, and drive recklessly. What makes it truly strange, this story shown in an early mission in Valiant Hearts really happened at the beginning of World War One.
No more pictures
I'd like to show more of my favourite video game rides but, sadly, I don't have the pictures at hand. For example, I'd love to make people familiar with Silt Striders, the gigantic insects used as public transport in Elder Scrolls Morrowind but I played that game years ago and didn't make any screenshots back then. Maybe there's a lesson in it and I should replay some classic titles to complete my private screencap collection.

Looking more closely at the image, I really see all the damage done to the plane. It really looks like Swiss cheese.
The damage models in War Thunder are fantastic, you can even get a big hole in your plane wing and try to do an emergency landing.
