Adivina de qué se trata. 😁 Si no eres católico estoy seguro que aún lo desconoces así que déjame compartir primero más sobre esta semana previa al Domingo de Resurrección.

¿Qué ocurre en Semana Santa, antes de Pascua?
Aquí en Filipinas tenemos muchas actividades. No, no me refiero a la gente que va a las numerosas playas de nuestro país. Los católicos nominales o tibios hacen eso porque tienen prioridades personales.
De todos modos, no me voy a ir a los extremos (porque también tenemos esas tradiciones), pero aquí está un horario típico de la iglesia hasta el Domingo de Pascua.

🌴 Domingo de Ramos
Comenzamos con el Domingo de Ramos. Toda la Iglesia católica conmemora el momento en el que Jesús entra en Jerusalén montado en un burro. ¿Por qué en burro? Porque entra no como un soldado o rey (que normalmente usa un caballo) sino como una persona humilde y baja.
¿Por qué la gente usa palmas? Porque es un símbolo de paz y victoria, especialmente en tiempos de Jesús.

¿Sabía que también se hace una procesión antes de entrar en la iglesia? Suele hacerse por la mañana temprano o durante la primera misa del día. Localmente lo llamamos Paglalatag (extender o tender). Los sacerdotes pisan mantones o paños (a imitación de Cristo) durante la procesión antes de entrar en la iglesia.

Sin embargo, no asistí a esta actividad de la iglesia temprano en la mañana el año pasado o la semana pasada. No soy tan hardcore (incondicional) todavía 😆 Tal vez el próximo año voy a experimentarlo.
📖 Lunes Santo
Es cuando comienza la Pabasa ng Pasyon (Lectura de la Pasión). Ha sido una de nuestras muchas tradiciones eclesiásticas desde principios del siglo XVI. La primera versión fue escrita por Gaspar Aquino de Belén. Sin embargo, en 1814 se elaboró una nueva, que es la más utilizada hasta ahora.
El Pasión es el canto ritual de la vida, pasión, muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo. Tradicionalmente comienza este día y puede durar de 1 a 3 días. Por ejemplo, hay iglesias que lo hacen desde el lunes hasta el martes. O bien comienzan el martes o el miércoles, mientras que algunas incluso empiezan el Jueves Santo por la tarde y terminan el Viernes Santo, a mediodía o a las 15.00 horas.
El tono del canto depende de la región o zona del país. Hay una gran variedad. He aquí un ejemplo con partes de la poesía épica para que todos lo vean.

En realidad al principio pensé que sólo comenzó en nuestra diócesis justo esta Semana Santa. Tenemos un nuevo obispo, por eso pensé que tal vez había dicho a todas las iglesias que lo hicieran. Pero al revisar las páginas de las redes sociales de varias iglesias, parece que ha estado sucediendo durante años, especialmente antes de la pandemia. Puede parecer una tradición en vías de extinción, pero sigue ahí para que las generaciones futuras la aprecien.
Al principio me sentí mal por no haber ido a alguna iglesia cercana para unirme y cantar aunque sea alguna parte en este día. 😅 Así que tuve esa sensación de FOMO (temor a perderse algo). Jaja nunca me había pasado pero claro todos cambiamos. Menos mal que al final pude encontrar una iglesia que lo tenía hasta las 4 pm del miércoles. Así que feliz de que yo era capaz de experimentar unirse a cantar por primera vez, por fin. ¡Gracias Señor!

😇 Martes Santo
No hay mucho que hacer más que ir a misa. Dependiendo de la parroquia y la zona algunas también programan la confesión en misa de los feligreses, o hay rezo del Vía Crucis, etc. Realmente depende de tu iglesia local.
Al parecer, a este día también se le llama «martes del traidor» porque la lectura del Evangelio trata de eso. Ya sabes, lo que hizo Judas Iscariote. Aquí tienes algo para ver y aprender más sobre ello, sólo tienes que activar los subtítulos y elegir el idioma para traducirlo:
✝️ Miércoles Santo
Este día, por supuesto, también hay misa y se reza el Vía Crucis. Pero lo mejor es que en muchos lugares de Filipinas se celebra otra joya cultural.
¿Has oído hablar o has visto alguna vez un Senákulo (representación de la Pasión)? Este término filipino procede de la palabra española cenáculo, que significa «aposento alto».
En cada Senákulo se representa la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Jesucristo. Se dice que esto comenzó a finales del siglo XVII, cuando se creó el Pasión.
Algunas parroquias hacen el espectáculo en la calle, desplazándose de un lugar a otro o en una sola zona, mientras que otras lo representan en el interior de la propia iglesia. Mientras tanto, en la capital filipina de la Cuaresma, ¡se crucifica a la gente de verdad! No es broma, hay quien jura hacerlo de por vida como forma de dar gracias a Dios.
Dependiendo del lugar, la representación de la Pasión puede hacerse el Viernes Santo. Pero, por supuesto, también hay iglesias que no lo hacen. Creo que depende del obispo de cada diócesis/arquidiócesis lo que hagan las parroquias en cada zona.
Aunque yo no vi nada de eso en ninguna iglesia. Ves te dije que no soy un católico empedernido todavía. 😆Eventualmente vi una publicación en las redes sociales de una iglesia que compartió una versión en línea. Y whoa ¡ya me vale! Al menos no me decepcionó tanto. Jaja.

🏺 Jueves Santo
Este día tiene lugar la misa crismal en las catedrales de cada diócesis. ¿En qué consiste? Es cuando los óleos que se usan para varios sacramentos son consagrados/bendecidos por el obispo. Cada parroquia dispondrá entonces de un suministro anual de óleos bendecidos.

Nunca he ido a una. El año pasado y hace unos días no pude ir a una misa de este tipo, pero espero poder ir el año que viene.
De todos modos, el Triduo Pascual comienza el Jueves Santo y termina con la Vigilia Pascual (Sábado Negro). ¿Sabías que es una misa continua dividida en 3 partes? Mola, ¿verdad? 😁 Eso no lo sabía yo antes jeje.
También es cuando cada iglesia pone un Altar de Reposo donde el cura pone el Santísimo. Y claro debido a esto luego empieza la Visita Iglesia después de la misa vespertina. El año pasado no hice la visita a 7 iglesias. Así que esta vez solo lo hice porque vi una señalización de una iglesia en Cubao en la que nunca había estado. Y así es como empezó todo. Haha. Aquí está el lugar al que fui primero durante la tarde.

☠️ Viernes Santo
Antes de pasar a la tradición eclesiástica, permítanme decir lo siguiente. En este día los brujos (albularyos o mangkukulams), curanderos, mangtatawas, creyentes de la Nueva Era, etc., van a las montañas «sagradas» para hacer sus rituales. Afirman que, como Jesús ha muerto ese día, pueden cargar/recargar cualquier objeto New Age/oculto que tengan.
Aunque la broma es para ellos, el diablo los ha embaucado de verdad. 😅 Jesús está más vivo desde su resurrección hasta siempre que muerto cada Viernes Santo 😉 Para tu información, Jesús NO muere cada Viernes Santo, ni es «re-sacrificado» durante cada misa. Esa no es la enseñanza de la Iglesia católica. No dudes en hacer una búsqueda en webs católicas de renombre para saber más. 😏
Este es el día en que veneramos la imagen crucificada de Jesús durante la misa como memorial de lo que hizo por la humanidad. Se hace después del ritual cuando el sacerdote también quita el velo/tapa del crucifijo.
En cuanto a lo demás que hice ese día, por fin completé la procesión del Santo Entierro después de la misa. El año pasado no la terminé así que esta vez acabé completándola. Jeje.

🕯️ Sábado Negro, Vigilia Pascual
El año pasado no aprecié tanto la misa como este año por alguna razón. No sé, tal vez sea porque era la primera vez que la vivía en 2024. Todo lo que podía decir entonces era whoa que tomó un tiempo para terminar. 😆 Así que esta vez realmente era capaz de amar a todo sobre él.
Quiero decir, ¡guau! La misa de la Vigilia Pascual es la más bonita de todas las que he conocido. Empieza en la oscuridad y luego encendíamos velas después de la bendición del fuego por parte del sacerdote. También se canta mucho como parte del culto. En total dura 3 horas, ¡pero ni siquiera es aburrida! Me encanta. Si nunca has ido a una, ¡te lo estás perdiendo!

Por fin ha llegado el Domingo de Resurrección. Lástima que sólo haya terminado de escribir esto hoy. ¡Y ya estamos a martes! 😁
Entonces, ¿de qué se trata este día? ¡Pues claro que es la conmemoración de la resurrección de Jesucristo! Verdaderamente Él es un Dios que también se hizo hombre sólo para salvarnos de la muerte (Pecado Original) y así nos dio la vida eterna (si decidimos aceptarla). ¡¡¡Gloria a Dios en las alturas!!!

A primera hora de la mañana, los católicos tenemos otra costumbre centenaria que seguimos practicando hoy en día. Se llama el Salubong (ir al encuentro de alguien). Es lo que ocurre en todas las parroquias cada Pascua: La afligida madre de Cristo se encuentra con su Hijo resucitado. Awwww. ❤️
Lo que ocurre es que la gente lleva las estatuas de la dolorosa Mama María y de Cristo resucitado para que se encuentren en un mismo lugar después de las procesiones. Cada imagen vendrá de una zona determinada y se reunirán en algún lugar fuera de la iglesia.

Y, por supuesto, hay otro espectáculo muy esperado. Un niño vestido de ángel se descolgará para quitar el velo negro de Mamá María. Sí, ¡ha resucitado!
Después, la celebración de la misa dominical se prolonga durante todo el día. Todos podrán renovar sus votos bautismales. Los que no hayan asistido a la Vigilia Pascual podrán renovarlos este día.
Así que ya ves, desde los primeros cristianos hasta todos los que vivimos en el presente, hemos llegado a conocer todo esto porque se ha hecho durante siglos aquí en nuestro país. Además de eso, la Iglesia católica tiene muchas tradiciones que parten de todo lo que hicieron los apóstoles tal como lo enseñó Jesucristo. ¡Eso son dos milenios de historia! No es increíble que aún hoy seamos capaces de hacerlo 😀 .

What Happens During Holy Week, Before Easter?
Here in the Philippines, we have plenty of activities. No I'm not talking about people going to the many beaches in our country. Nominal or lukewarm Catholics do that because they have personal priorities.
Anyway, not going to the extremes (because we do have such traditions too) but here's a typical church schedule until Easter Sunday.

🌴 Palm Sunday
We start it off with Palm Sunday. The entire Catholic Church commemorates the time when Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey. Why a donkey? Because He is entering not as a soldier or king (who usually uses a horse) but as a lowly and humble person.
Why did/do people use palms? Because it is a symbol of peace and victory, especially during Jesus' time.

Did you know that there's also a procession done before entering the church? This is usually done early in the morning or during the first mass of the day. Locally we call this as Paglalatag (spreading or laying out). Priests step on shawls or cloths (in imitation of Christ) during the procession before entering the church.

I didn't attend this early morning church activity last year or last week though. I'm not that hardcore yet. 😆 Perhaps next year I will experience it.
📖 Holy Monday
This is when the Pabasa ng Pasyon (Reading of the Passion) starts. It has been one of our many church traditions since the early 16th century. The earliest version was written by Gaspar Aquino De Belen. However by 1814, a newer one was made and this is the most commonly used until now.
The Pasyon is the chanting or ritual singing of the life, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Traditionally it starts on this day and can last for 1 to 3 days. For example there are churches that would do this on Monday until Tuesday. Or they either begin it on Tuesday or Wednesday while some even begin on the afternoon of Maundy Thursday then end on Good Friday, at noon or by 3 pm.
The tone of the chant depends on the region or area of the country. There's a variety of it. Here's an example with parts of the epic poetry for you all to see.
Below is one of the easier melodies to sing and memorize. This is from Sto. Cristo Quasi-Parish in Bulacan. They did it for 3 days. Here's a live video they shared on Holy Monday.
Actually I initially thought it only started in our diocese just this Holy Week. We have a new bishop that's why I thought perhaps he told all the churches to have such. But checking on social media pages of various churches, it seems it has been happening for years, especially before the pandemic. Like duh, it may seem like a dying tradition but it's still here for future generations to appreciate!
At first I felt bad I did not go to any nearby church to join and sing even some part of it on this day. 😅 So I kinda had that FOMO feeling. Haha I never did before but of course we all change. Good thing I was eventually able to find a church that had it until 4 pm of Wednesday. So happy I was able to experience joining in singing it for the first time, finally. Thank you Lord!

😇 Holy Tuesday
Nothing much to do but go to mass. Depending on the parish and area some also schedule the mass confession of parishioners, or there's praying at the Stations of the Cross, etc. It really depends on your local church.
Apparently this day is also called "Traitor Tuesday" because the Gospel reading is about that. You know, what Judas Iscariot did. Here's something to watch and learn more about it, just turn on the subtitle and choose the language to translate it:
✝️ Holy Wednesday
On this day of course there's mass too and also praying the Stations of the Cross. But the best part is, another cultural gem happens in many places in the Philippines.
Have you ever heard of or seen a Senákulo (Passion Play)? This Filipino term comes from the Spanish word cenáculo which means 'upper room'.
In every Senákulo people get to see a reenactment and dramatization of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is said to have started back in the late 17th century since the Pasyon was created.
Some parishes do the show in the streets, either moving from place to place or just in one area, while others perform inside the church itself. Meanwhile in the Lenten Capital of the Philippines, people are getting crucified for real! I'm not kidding, there are those who vow to do such for life as a way to thank God.
Depending on the location, the Passion Play can instead be done on Good Friday. But of course there are also churches who do not do this. I believe it depends on the bishop of each diocese/archdiocese on what parishes do in each area.
I did not watch any of it in any church though. See I told you I'm not a hardcore Catholic yet. 😆Eventually I saw a social media post of a church which shared an online version. And whoa it's good enough for me! At least it did not disappoint that much. Haha.

🏺 Maundy Thursday
On this day the Chrism mass happens in the cathedrals of each diocese. What's that? It's when oils which are used for various sacraments are consecrated/blessed by the bishop. Each parish will then have an annual supply of blessed oils.

I've never been to one you know. I wasn't able to go to such a mass last year and a few days ago but hopefully I will be able to go next year.
Anyway, the Easter Triduum starts on Maundy Thursday and ends with the Easter Vigil (Black Saturday). Did you know, it's one whole continuous mass broken into 3 parts! Cool, right? 😁 I didn't know about that before. hehe.
This is also when each church puts up an Altar of Repose where the priest puts the Blessed Sacrament. And of course because of this the Visita Iglesia then commences after the evening mass. Last year I did not do the visiting of 7 churches at all. So this time I just did it because I saw a signage of a church in Cubao that I never been to. And that's how it all started. Haha. ☠️ Good Friday
Before I go to the church tradition, let me just say this. On this day the witchdoctors (albularyos or mangkukulams), faith healers, mangtatawas, New Agers, etc., go to "sacred" mountains to do their rituals. They claim that since Jesus is dead on this day they can charge/recharge whatever New Age/occult items they have.
Joke's on them though, the devil has truly duped them. 😅 Jesus is more alive since His resurrection until forever than dead every Good Friday. 😉 FYI, Jesus DOES NOT die every Good Friday, nor is He "re-sacrificed" during each mass. That is not the teaching of the Catholic Church. Feel free to do a search in reputable Catholic websites to know more. 😏
This is the day when we venerate Jesus' crucified image during mass as a memorial to what He did for humanity. It is done after the ritual when the priest also removes the veil/covering from the crucifix.
As for what else I did on this day, well I finally completed the Santo Entierro (Holy Burial) procession after the mass. I didn't finish it last year so I ended up completing it this time. Hehe.

🕯️ Black Saturday, Easter Vigil
Last year I did not really appreciate the mass as much as this year for some reason. I dunno, maybe it's because it was my first time to experience it in 2024. All I could say then was whoa it took a while to finish. 😆 So this time I actually was able to love everything about it.
I mean, wow! The Easter Vigil mass is the most beautiful mass of all that I've ever known. It starts in darkness and then we would light candles after the priest's blessing of the fire. There's plenty of singing as part of worship too! All in all it takes 3 hours but it's not even boring! I love it. 😍 If you've never been to one, you're missing out!

Easter Sunday is Here!
And finally, Easter Sunday has arrived. Too bad I only finished writing this today. And it's already Tuesday! 😁
So what is this day all about? Well of course it is the commemoration of Jesus Christ's rising from the dead! Truly He is a God who also became man just to save us from death (Original Sin) and thus gave us eternal life (should we choose to accept it). Glory to God in the highest!!!

Early in the morning we Catholics have another centuries old custom that we still do to this day. It is called the Salubong (going to meet someone). It is what happens in every parish every Easter: The grieving mother of Christ meets her resurrected Son. Awwww. ❤️
What happens is people bring the statues of the sorrowful Mama Mary and the risen Christ to meet together in one place after the processions. Each image will be coming from a certain area and then meet somewhere just outside the church.

And of course there is another much awaited spectacle. A child dressed as an angel would be dangled down to remove the black veil of Mama Mary. Yes, He is risen indeed!
Afterwards the Sunday mass celebration happens all throughout the day. Everyone will be able to renew their baptismal vows. Those who did not attend the Easter Vigil would be able to renew it on this day.
So you see, from early Christians to all of us living in the present, we have come to know all of these because it has been done for centuries here in our country. On top of that, the Catholic Church has many traditions starting from all of what the apostles did as taught by Jesus Christ. That's two millennia of history! Isn't it amazing we are still able to do it today? 😀
