What you are about to read is a reflection that does not aim too high. I do not intend to be arrogant or start by claiming that what you will read in the following lines contains the Truth about what we know as Power Up. Rather, I wish to propose a reflection on what Power Up means for those of us who inhabit the Hive blockchain. I have decided to write this for three reasons. Recently, I saw that the @hivecreatorsday account shared a post inviting people to break a record and participate in the next powerupday on the first day of November. If you want to know more, check out the post.
The second reason is that my friend @desic has invited me to participate in the initiative, and the last reason, but not least, is that I have been reflecting on different aspects of the Hive blockchain with a bit of philosophy. So, taking advantage of the invitation, let's talk a little about Power Up.
The philosophy of PowerUpDay
When I thought about a philosophy of PowerUp, everything that the mechanism implies for the blockchain came to mind, as well as the reasons and arguments that support the practice of locking Hive in our wallet. If you have been on Hive for a while, you probably know well why Power Up exists, but if you still don't quite understand what it's all about, let me explain it briefly without getting too technical.
Power Up is a mechanism that, in short, consists of locking Hive in our wallet. Locked Hive represents our investment in Hive; it is like our share in the blockchain. The higher the stake (locked Hive), the more influence our participation in the blockchain has, depending on where it is exercised. On the social side, it allows us to distribute Hive from the reward pool, and in governance, it allows us to approve witnesses or proposals in the DHF (Hive Decentralized Fund). In short, the HivePower we possess can be interpreted as a measure of our participation, as well as our commitment to the Hive project as a blockchain.
Understanding this led me to consider the ethics of responsibility as a philosophical current that can help us understand, philosophically speaking, what Power Up entails. That said, it is worth asking: What is the ethics of responsibility about? How can we understand Power Up from this perspective?
In short, we could mention that one of the main exponents of this ethic has been Hans Jonas, and that it was precisely this German philosopher who provided a perspective on technological advances, even though I don't think he could have imagined something like Blockchain. This ethic consists of, or could be considered to have its core in, the moral obligation that people have to assume the consequences of their actions, as well as to foresee the consequences, not only immediately, but also in the long term.
Personally, I must confess that I am not familiar with Hans Jonas' philosophy, but after reading some articles, passages, and various quotes, I believe that Kant's influence on Jonas' thinking is undeniable. In fact, he goes so far as to formulate a kind of imperative, taking Kant's categorical imperative as his starting point, so that people can understand that each of them has power, and that this power has the capacity to alter the world around them, which implies a truly profound responsibility, as well as not forgetting and keeping future generations in mind. In other words, what you decide today has an impact on the world, and that should lead us to reflect beforehand on what we do, because every action has a consequence.
Jonas' Imperative or Principle of Responsibility
“Act in such a way that the effects of your actions are compatible with the permanence of an authentically human life on Earth.”
Isn't that an interesting imperative? Although I'm not much of a fan of imperatives, I can't deny that this principle of responsibility invites us to reflect deeply and that, in our case, it would be interesting to think about adapting it to the Hive blockchain. In this sense, the ethics of responsibility that we use today to discuss Power Up a little makes us consider that freedom should not be understood as doing whatever we want, or choosing because we have the ability to do so, but rather, it makes us consider the commitment to foresee and be accountable for the actions we take, since these have implications for others. From this perspective, no individual decision is ever completely individual, and I find this deeply positive for us because it is not based on an abstract norm, but rather on a situational ethic that responds to a specific context.
At this point, you may be wondering how we can adapt Jonas' ethical principle to Hive. So I will venture to paraphrase the imperative, seeking not only to adapt it to our needs. Perhaps academics familiar with Hans Jonas' philosophy will find this an affront or a profound misinterpretation, but I hope the exercise will be useful for the Hive community.
Ethical principle of responsibility with Hive
Work in such a way that the effect of your action is edifying with the permanence and construction of the Hive blockchain.
There is a tendency to look at the price of Hive on the market, and yes, it is a determining factor in the monetization and distribution of assets through content creation, but it must be understood that the “supply and demand” of Hive is much more complex than it may seem, and being able to retain Hive is a factor that not only empowers people on the network, as we have previously mentioned, but also helps to reduce the available supply of Hive.
That said, I do not intend to point fingers at the community, much less imply that the decline in the price of our main asset is an effect of low or high stake retention, not at all. What I do intend is to raise awareness of the importance of Power Up, since, considering the ethical principle outlined above, increasing our stake is one of the actions that, as a consequence or effect, is uplifting for the whole of Hive.
This reminds me of the phrase “What is good for the bee is good for the hive,” which, although repeated or trite, should not be underestimated, as it reminds us that individual well-being is also community well-being, and therefore values such as cooperation and the importance of caring for the system are actions that each person must consider so that the entire system can thrive.
In the end, I think I went on longer than I imagined, for which I apologize, but I hope I have made myself clear, and that this dissertation not only aims to provide a philosophical or ethical approach to Power Up Day, but also serves as an invitation for more people to join this celebration of increasing our stake. PS: Hans Jonas's understanding of the ethics of responsibility is much richer and more complex than what you have read in the previous lines. My interpretation is nothing more than a simplistic approximation of ethics.

La Filosofía del PowerUp: Una aproximación a la ética de la responsabilidad
Lo que leerás a continuación es una reflexión que no pretende demasiado, no pretendo pecar de soberbio o partir afirmando que lo que leerás en las próximas líneas poseen la Verdad sobre lo que conocemos como Power Up, más bien, tengo el deseo de proponer una reflexión sobre lo que implica el Power Up para quienes habitamos la blockchain de Hive. Me he animado a escribir esto por tres razones, recientemente he visto que desde la cuenta @hivecreatorsday han compartido una publicación invitando a romper un record e invitar a participar en el próximo powerupday el primer día del mes de noviembre, si deseas saber más mira la publicación.
La segunda razón es que mi amiga @desic me ha invitado a participar en la iniciativa y la última razón, no menos importante, es que he venido reflexionando sobre diferentes aspectos de la blockchain Hive con un poco de filosofía. Por lo que aprovechando la invitación, vamos a disertar un poco sobre el Power up.
La filosofía del PowerUpDay
Cuando pensaba en una filosofía del PowerUp venía a mi mente todo lo que implica el mecanismo para la blockchain, también en las razones y argumentos que respaldan la práctica de bloquear Hive en nuestra billetera. Si tienes tiempo en Hive seguramente conoces bien el por qué del Power Up, pero si aun no entiendes bien de qué va todo esto, permíteme explicarlo brevemente sin demasiado tecnicismo.
El Power Up es un mecanismo que en pocas palabras consiste en bloquear Hive en nuestra billetera. El Hive bloqueado representa nuestra inversión en Hive, es como nuestra acción en la blockchain. A mayor Stake (hive bloqueado) nuestra participación en la blockchain tiene más influencia, solo depende donde se ejerza. En la parte social nos permite distribuir Hive de la piscina de recompensas, en la gobernanza nos permite aprobar testigos o propuestas en el DHF (Fondo descentralizado de Hive). En resumen, el HivePower que poseamos puede interpretarse como la medida de nuestra participación, también como el compromiso que se tiene con el proyecto Hive como blockchain.
Entender esto me llevó a considerar a la ética de la responsabilidad como una corriente filosófica que nos puede ayudar a comprender filosóficamente hablando lo que implica el Power Up. Dicho esto cabe preguntarse ¿De qué trata la Ética de la responsabilidad? ¿Cómo podemos entender el PowerUp desde esta perspectiva?
En pocas palabras podríamos mencionar que uno de los principales exponentes de esta ética ha sido Hans Jonas, y que precisamente este filósofo alemán proporcionó una mirada de cara a los avances tecnológicos y eso que no creo que haya llegado a imaginar algo como Blockchain. Y esta ética consiste o podría considerarse que su centro está en la obligación moral que tienen las personas a asumir las consecuencias de sus acciones, también de prever las consecuencias, no solo de manera inmediata, sino a largo plazo.
Personalmente debo confesar que no soy conocedor de la filosofía de Hans Jonas, pero, tras leer algunos artículos, algunos pasajes y citas varias, creo que es indudable la influencia kantiana en el pensamiento de Jonas. De hecho, llega a formular una suerte de imperativo, tomando como punto de partida el imperativo categórico kantiano con el fin de que las personas puedan entender que cada uno tiene un poder, y que dicho poder posee la capacidad de alterar el mundo que les rodea, y eso implica una responsabilidad realmente profunda, además de no olvidar y tener presente las futuras generaciones. En otras palabras, lo que decides hoy tiene un impacto en el mundo, y eso nos debe llevar a reflexionar de manera previa lo que hacemos, pues cada acción tiene una consecuencia.
El Imperativo de Jonas o principio de responsabilidad
“«Obra de tal manera que los efectos de tu acción sean compatibles con la permanencia de una vida auténticamente humana sobre la Tierra»”
¿Acaso no es interesante el imperativo? Aunque, no soy mucho de imperativos, no debo negar que este principio de responsabilidad nos invita a reflexionar profundamente y que en nuestro caso sería interesante pensar en una adaptación de cara a la blockchain de Hive. En este sentido, la ética de la responsabilidad que usamos hoy para disertar un poco sobre el Power Up, nos hace considerar que la libertad no debe entenderse como un hacer lo que sea, o elegir porque se posee la capacidad de hacerlo, sino, que nos hace considerar el compromiso de prever y responder por las acciones que llevamos a cabo, pues estas tienen una implicación con los demás, desde esta perspectiva, nunca una decisión individual es completamente individual y me parece profundamente positiva para nosotros, porque no se basa en un norma abstracta, sino más bien en una ética situacional, que responde a un contexto determinado.
En este punto puede que te estés preguntando cómo podemos adaptar el principio ético de Jonas a Hive. Por lo que me atreveré a parafrasear el imperativo buscando no solo adaptarlo a nuestras necesidades, quizá los académicos conocedores de la filosofía de Hans Jonas les parezca un agravio o una profunda malinterpretación, pero espero sea útil el ejercicio para la comunidad de Hive.
Principio ético de responsabilidad con Hive
Obra de tal manera que el efecto de tu acción sea edificante con la permanencia y construcción de la blockchain Hive.
Mucho se tiende a mirar el precio del Hive en el mercado, y si, es un factor determinante en la monetización y la distribución de activos por medio de la creación de contenido, pero, hay que entender que la “oferta y la demanda” de Hive es algo mucho más complejo de como se puede oír, y poder retener Hive es un factor que no sólo empodera a las personas en la red como previamente lo hemos mencionado, sino que además, ayuda a disminuir la oferta de Hive disponible.
Dicho esto, no pretendo señalar a la comunidad y menos insinuar que el declive ene precio de nuestro activo principal es un efecto de poca o mucha retención de stake, en lo absoluto. Lo que sí pretendo es concientizar en la importancia del Power Up, puesto que considerando el principio ético expuesto, el aumentar nuestro stake es una de las acciones que como consecuencia o efecto es edificante para todo Hive.
Esto me hace pensar en la frase “Lo que es bueno para la abeja es bueno para la colmena”, que por repetida o trillada debe no menospreciarse pues nos evoca a pensar que el bienestar individual es también bienestar comunitario, por lo que valores como la cooperación y la importancia en cuidar del sistema es una acción que cada persona debe considerar para que todo el sistema pueda prosperar.
Al final creo me extendí más de lo que imaginé, por ello pido disculpas, pero, espero haberme dado a entender, y que esta disertación no solo pretende brindar un enfoque filosófico o ético al Power Up Day, sino que, pueda ser una invitación a que más personas se unan a esta fiesta de aumentar nuestro stake y que no quiero poner punto final sin antes invitar a @zullyscott, @enraizar, @joheredia21, @tsunsica, @rlathulerie y a todo aquél que le pueda interesar a participar en el reto del PowerUpDay el próximo 1 de Noviembre.
PD: La ética de la responsabilidad entendida desde Hans Jonas es mucho más rica y compleja de lo que has leído en las líneas anteriores. Mi interpretación no es otra cosa que una aproximación simplista de la ética.
