Hey fellow Hiveans!
Recently took a trip to Shoreditch in east London after being inspired by a fellow pilot sharing their photos. This was another perfect day for flying- the air was still, sun was high and visibility was on point.
Truman Brewery which can be seen in the foreground was founded in the 1660's praised for producing small batches of beer.
By 1760, there was huge demand for Porter, or stout beer, which was the first beer that could be mass produced. After seeing huge profits producing Porter, land was bought next door to expand the brewery and it became the third largest brewery in London.
By the early 1800's, the popularity of pale ale rose significantly. Trumans tried to form an alliance with the main brewer of said drink but was rejected, so Truman's just bought it outright!
As a result of that acquisition and purchasing more land close by for expanding its own brewery, Truman became largest beer brewers in the world by the end of the 19th century. Naturally, competition arose but it came from outside the Britain. Cheaper production and brewing techniques forced business decisions in which the executives tried to adapt the business model but ultimately, the brewery closed in 1989.
Recently, the brewery has been converted into various entertainment spaces with studios, shops and markets. The venue is close to Brick Lane and all it has to offer.
The modern day glass clad skyscrapers dominate the horizon as a stark contrast between the past and future. As buildings are continuously being built in the centre, I wonder how different the skyline will look in the next century!
Seen below are views towards Shoreditch high street to the west and to the north respectively. The green area seen next to the railway lines was once home to a garden that was built up by squatters and the public could visit.
