Heute werfen wir mal wieder einen Blick auf ein Exemplar in meiner Messersammlung. Zwar ist es nur eine billige Kopie, wahrscheinlich aus China oder Taiwan, aber trotzdem mit interessantem Hintergrund.

Today we're going to take another look at a example in my knife collection. It's just a cheap copy, probably from China or Taiwan, but still with an interesting background.
Das Original, auf dem die Kopie beruht, ist ein ziehmlich bekanntes Survival Messer, mit dem auch Rambo schon auftrat. Es ist das "Buck 184" der Firma Buck Knifes aus San Diego, Kalifornien. Produziert wurde es von 1984 bis 1997, ab 1987 unter dem Name "Buckmaster". Heute muß man für ein Buck 184 bei Ebay zwischen 300 und 1000 Dollar anlegen. Hier ein Foto eines frühen Buck 184:
The original on which the copy is based is a well-known survival knife, with which Rambo has already performed. It's the "Buck 184" from Buck Knifes in San Diego, California. It was produced from 1984 to 1997, from 1987 under the name "Buckmaster". Today you have to invest between 300 and 1000 dollars for a Buck 184 on Ebay. Here is a photo of an early Buck 184:

Und hier nun mein "Buck". Außer dem fehlenden Stempel auf der Klinge, bemerkt man auch sofort die schludrige Verarbeitung im Vergleich zum Original. Ich habe dies Messer vor ca. 25 Jahren mal in einem Keller gefunden, als ich bei einer Hausverwaltung gearbeitet habe. Leider fehlten schon damals die beiden Spikes, die in der Parierstange eingeschraubt werden können (mehr dazu später) sowie auch die Scheide.
And here now my "Buck". In addition to the missing stamp on the blade, you immediately notice the sloppy workmanship compared to the original. I found this knife about 25 years ago in a cellar while I was working for a property management company. Unfortunately, the two spikes that can be screwed into the crossguard were missing even then (more on this later) and also the scabbard.
Anders als das Original, trägt die Kopie einen Stempel "Stainless / Rostfrei" auf der linken Seite der Klinge. Dies scheint typisch für solche Kopien zu sein.
Unlike the original, the copy is stamped "Stainless/Rostfrei" on the left side of the blade. This seems to be typical of such copies.
Trotz der Mängel im Finish ist auch die Kopie extrem massiv und stabil gebaut. Es besteht komplett aus rostfreim Stahl. Die Klinge ist 8mm dick, die Parierstange 6mm. Man sieht hier auch die Gewinde für die Spikes. Diese sollen das Messer in einen Wurfanker verwandeln - eine ziehmlich bescheuerte Idee, wie ich finde.
Despite the obvious flaws in the finish, the copy is also extremely solid and stable. It is made entirely of stainless steel. The blade is 8mm thick, the crossguard 6mm. You can also see the threads for the spikes here. These should turn the knife into a grappling hook - a pretty stupid idea, I think.
Auch der Sägerücken der Klinge ist wenig brauchbar. Die extreme Schnittbreite würde sägen sehr schwierig machen - aber da die Säge viel zu kurz ist, stellt sich dieses Problem erst garnicht. Dafür sind die Sägezacken extrem scharf und man verletzt sich sehr leicht daran. Und dann - nur ganz theoretisch - würde man das Ding einem ... äh... Bär in die Rippen rammen, oder in einen Autoreifen, dauert es wahrscheinlich eine halbe Stunde bis man es wieder rausgezogen bekommt.
The saw back of the blade is also of little use. The extreme cutting width would make sawing very difficult - but since the saw is far too short, this problem does not arise at all. On the other hand, the saw teeth are extremely sharp and it is very easy to injure yourself. And then - only totally hypothetical - if you would ram the thing a ... uh ... bear in the ribs, or into a car tire, it would probably take half an hour to get it pulled out again.
Bleibt noch das Stück der Klinge mit Sägeschliff. Dies ist sehr scharf und aggressiv, gut geeignet um zB. Seile oder ähnliches zu durchschneiden. Allerdings auch nicht besonders groß, also auch mit Einschränkungen zu sehen.
That leaves the piece of the saw-edged blade. This is very sharp and aggressive, well suited to e.g. cut ropes or the like. However, not particularly large, so it has limits as well.
Bleibt noch der Griff... dieser ist, wie auch beim Original, hohl und mit einer massiven Schraubkappe mit O-Ring wasserdicht verschlossen. Beim Original befindet sich innen in der Kappe ein Kompass, und diverse Survival Gegenstände im Griff, wie Sägedraht, Streichhölzer, Angelschur und Haken usw. Bei meinem Fundmesser war darin natürlich nichts mehr.
In dem Griff sieht man auch, das die Klinge mit einer dicken Mutter festgeschraubt ist, die dann mit Epoxy Harz vergossen wurde. Das ist auch beim Original so gemacht. Und es funktioniert offenbar ganz gut - alles ist völlig fest und nichts klappert, auch nach so vielen Jahren.
That leaves the handle to look at ... as with the original, it is hollow and sealed with a solid screw on cap with an O-ring, making it watertight. With the original comes a compass inside the cap, and various survival items in the handle, such as saw wire, matches, fishing line and hooks, etc. Of course, there was nothing left of that in my found knife.
In the handle you can also see that the blade is screwed on with a thick nut, which was then potted with epoxy resin. This is also done on the original Buck 184. And it apparently works quite well - everything is completely solid and nothing rattles, even after so many years.
Die Markierung am Griff ist mein persönliches Zeichen und hat nichts mit diesem speziellen Messer zu tun.
The marking on the handle is my personal mark and has nothing to do with this particular knife.
Zusammenfassend kann ich sagen, das ich sicher kein Geld für so ein Messer ausgeben würde. Keine hunderte von Dollar für ein Original, aber auch keine 45 Dollar (wie man es bei Amazon finden kann) für eine China Kopie.
Irgendwie kommt mir dieses Messer wie ein Pickup Truck vor: es kann vieles, aber nichts richtig gut.
Aber als Fundstück ist es natürlich ok, und zumindest hat es jetzt mal einen Zweck erfüllt - als Thema für dieses Post. :)
In summary, I can say that I would certainly not spend any money on such a knife. Not hundreds of dollars for an original, but also not 45 dollars (as you can find it for on Amazon) for a China copy.
Somehow this knife seems like a pickup truck to me: it can do a lot, but nothing really good.
But as a find it is of course ok, and at least it has served a purpose now - as a topic for this post. :)
