Peter Howson is quite an interesting guy. Glaswegian I think. He served in the army during the balkans war where he started sketching using pretty much what he had available at his disposal - things like boot polish and the like. Some of those pics are pretty dark, and has has produced quite a few war related pics, showing some of the horrors he saw there - they are pretty epic, but also pretty graphic.
He then became a drug addict and eventually came off it via the use of methadone, which allegedly is a vivid green in colour. During that period he used the same colour of green in a lot of his works to signify specific aspects relating it to his addiction. He certainly has a distinctive style, and his pics are pretty awesome !
