What Are We Eating, Some Midnight Thoughts

in Midnight Letters2 days ago

Hello 👋, my fellow night owls, it's midnight here, and these thoughts kept me occupied.

As I lay on my bed this silent night 🌃, I can't help but go back to the thought I had this afternoon while I was preparing my family dinner. When I put the bell peppers inside the grater, I kept asking myself, Where are the bell peppers I used to know just two years ago? The ones that gave your stew and jollof rice a beautiful red color. As I grated my peppers 🌶️🫑 and tomatoes, I couldn't seem to find any trace of the reddish bell peppers. I asked myself, What are we eating nowadays?

I used to be very excited about the reddish and delicious taste of my bell and chili peppers in my food just two years ago, but now I almost cannot tell the difference between the reddishness of my tomatoes and bell peppers; the taste is not what it used to be either. Is anyone not alarmed? Because I am.

The fertilizer in our food these days is simply too much. Are you paying attention to the taste of our staple rice? The beans, okra, and even yams. Our catfish 🐟 is not left out. They taste like something I can't describe, as most parts of their naturalness are getting lost. Don't even let me get started with our fruits 🍓 and vegetables these days; their taste is not far from chaff.

My parents were farmers, and I used to work on the farm while growing up, but how food used to taste back in those days is gradually becoming a thing of memory, which worries me. How far are these people willing to go in the name of modifying our foods? What is our food going to taste like in the next five to ten years?

I know what you might be thinking 🤔 — oh Funshee, why can't you grow your food? Let's face it, can everyone grow their own food — like all the food items? Let's not forget that not everyone has access to farmable land, and some who used to have vast land are no longer safe, thanks to insecurity in most parts of this part of the globe 🌎.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I'm beginning to feel like our food sector is under a deliberate attack. The government does not seem to care about all these, nor do the majority of the populace.

I really wish we could go back to the time when apples 🍎 used to taste like apples, when tomatoes, potatoes, and every other food used to taste natural.

What can we do?

If you live in a house with extra space or can access farmable, safe land, grow your vegetables or any other farm produce you can grow. I think this is the only way for now. Imagine if a significant number of people could key into growing their own food, the demand for unhealthy farm products would reduce, and who knows, maybe that would send a message to our farmers and every concerned key holder to start going back to producing farm produce the natural way. Until then, stay safe out there.

You have spoken so well ma,

Good morning from my end here🥰.

Honestly, technology has changed so many things about what we eat today. Back then, our parents and grandparents enjoyed real natural food fresh vegetables, fruits, and tubers grown straight from the soil without chemicals. Those foods gave them strength and long life.

But now, almost everything is hybrid or grown with fertilizers and preservatives. Even fruits that used to have seeds now some come seedless or with few seed, and they grow faster than they should. Truly, these things have health effects that is why we see all kinds of sicknesses today, including cancer.

People also no longer pay attention to what they eat. From one junk food to another ice cream, noodles, soft drinks we just fill the stomach without thinking of the body. I believe we really need to go back to eating more natural and healthy foods. Nature still has the best for us if we value it.

So our organs are crying daily because of the junk we keep feeding them with. Imagine someone waking up in the morning the first thing you take is sugar, in the afternoon, sugar again, and in the evening, the same thing.
Why won’t there be fatty liver? 🤦🤦
These habits gradually destroy our organs. @funshee you spoke previously about natural spice, which are good ways of detoxifying our organs even after taking these junks in a while..

God has blessed us with natural resources, one of which is water, yet we have replaced it with soft drinks. I am not saying soft drinks are bad, but many people now depend on them completely. Morning, afternoon, and night all sugary intake. When we live like this, our organs keep crying daily. No wonder some people keep having persistent headaches and rely on painkillers like Paracetamol without ever checking their diet.

These are some of the things silently killing us.
Well said, ma. Thanks for this wonderful piece it is truly a reminder for #hivers we need to stay healthy by paying attention to what we feed our body with..

When you eat correctly, you think correctly, when you think correctly, you write correctly🥰🥰🥰..

Thank you very much, @hillah. You have stated the truth, and it's scary that everything we now eat is nothing but chemicals, fertilizers, and preservatives. I really miss when food used to be natural, healthy, and nutritious.

God help us ooo.. let's just cultivate the habit of detoxifying ourselves and children weekly.. you are doing well ma

That is true, thank you for your insightful comments @hillah I wish you a great weekend.

Amen and you too.

What you're telling us is so real... Maybe the key is to return to consuming products from regions far from all current technology.

Yeah, you are right. In my country presently the western part are not applying fertilizer to their farm maybe only a few people does. As someone that lives in the Northern part of the country getting food items from that side is the best option.

Thank you very much for your comment.

It's a similar thing in many regions...

Oh Funshee, this is amazing, you took the words right out of my mouth! Fruits are the worst; I just can’t stand all of this happening, and it worries me a great deal where we are heading as a country.

P.S. I love the clock image! Mind if I copy you next time, Princess? 😊

Hmmm, my dear Ibb, this issue tired me, I don't know where we are going. No food is real food anymore; everything is chemical, fertilizer, and preservatives.

Mind if I copy you next time, Princess? 😊

Yes yes, feel free to do so❣️😊
