Hey, hello, welcome! I've been running a farm for a year and a half now, and I can honestly say that most of the animals that have passed through my yard are strays. I mainly produce grain, not meat or eggs, but I keep a few chickens and ducks for myself. I have over fifty of them in total, and even so, more stray animals have passed through my house. I live in the countryside, near a small town. I have a two-and-a-half-hectare plot of land next to my house, with garages and farm buildings. The barn is open, and I constantly find surprises in it. This is my life, and I want to share it with you.
Hej, cześć, witajcie! Prowadzę gospodarstwo już od półtora roku i powiem Wam szczerze, że najwięcej zwierząt, które przewinęły się przez moje podwórko, to przybłędy. Zajmuję się głównie produkcją zboża, nie mięsa czy jaj, ale dla siebie trzymam kilka kur i kaczek. W sumie mam ich ponad pięćdziesiąt, a i tak bezpańskich zwierząt przez mój dom przeszło więcej. Mieszkam na wsi, nieopodal małego miasteczka. Przy domu mam działkę o powierzchni dwóch i pół hektara, na której stoją garaże i budynki gospodarcze. Obora jest otwarta i ciągle znajduję w niej jakieś niespodzianki. Tak wygląda moje życie i chcę się nim z Wami podzielić.

I became interested in the issue of homelessness among cats and dogs some time ago, and with each new situation I gained knowledge and experience. In Poland, it is said that there are about a million homeless cats or cats that are only fed locally. You will often find lower numbers on the internet, but this is only because statistics are calculated and manipulated in different ways. It depends on how you define the concept of homelessness. Sometimes a cat that is fed by people but lives in a barn is considered "homeless" in one municipality but not in another. Some local governments are combating this problem through subsidy programmes for castration and sterilisation, but I know from experience that this can be problematic. In my municipality, the programme is very limited. The subsidy covers only 50% of the cost of the procedures and only for two cats per year. In practice, this is completely insufficient, because there are many more animals.
Tematem bezdomności wśród kotów i psów zainteresowałem się już jakiś czas temu i z każdą kolejną sytuacją zdobywałem wiedzę i praktykę. W Polsce mówi się, że jest około miliona bezdomnych albo tylko lokalnie dokarmianych kotów. W internecie często znajdziecie liczby mniejsze, ale to tylko dlatego, że statystyki są różnie liczone i manipulowane. Zależy, jak zdefiniuje się samo pojęcie bezdomności. Czasami kot karmiony przez ludzi, ale mieszkający w stodole, w jednej gminie jest już traktowany jako „bezdomny”, a w innej nie. Niektóre samorządy walczą z tym problemem poprzez programy dopłat do kastracji i sterylizacji, ale z doświadczenia wiem, że bywa z tym kiepsko. W mojej gminie program jest bardzo ograniczony. Dopłata wynosi zaledwie 50% kosztów zabiegów i to tylko dla dwóch kotów w ciągu roku. W praktyce jest to zupełnie niewystarczające, bo zwierząt pojawia się znacznie więcej.

I come across stray animals practically all the time. Most often, they show up on their own. In a year and a half, I have acquired two domestic cats and several dogs this way, although I have a feeling that this is only the beginning. Last year, I had an experience that I will not forget for a long time. Walking through my forest, I noticed a white bag. When I looked inside, I froze. There were six starving kittens, covered in tar and their own faeces. It was a tragic sight. Fortunately, we managed to rescue them and they all found homes thanks to a local community Facebook group. One of them, however, had other plans. When its new owner came to pick it up, the little one hid so effectively that it stayed with me permanently.
Na bezdomne przybłędy trafiam praktycznie cały czas. Najczęściej same się zjawiają. Przez półtora roku w ten sposób dorobiłem się dwóch kotów domowych i kilku psów, choć mam wrażenie, że to dopiero początek. W tamtym roku zdarzyła mi się sytuacja, której długo nie zapomnę. Wracając przez mój las, zauważyłem biały worek. Gdy zajrzałem do środka, zamarłem. Było tam sześć wygłodzonych kociąt, całych umazanych smołą i własnymi odchodami. Widok był tragiczny. Na szczęście udało się je odratować i wszystkie znalazły domy, dzięki grupe na FB lokalnej społeczności. Jeden z nich miał jednak inne plany. Kiedy przyjechał po niego nowy właściciel, maluch schował się tak skutecznie, że został u mnie na stałe.

Of course, that's not the end of it. On average, once or twice a month, another new cat appears. I go to the workshop and there's a wild tomcat. I go to the cowshed and find two more. I go into the barn and again something is looking at me from the corner. For a year now, I have been feeding this whole bunch of wild animals and trying to have them neutered. I won't hide the fact that this puts a heavy strain on my budget. My wallet hurts, but my heart would hurt even more if I did nothing about it. Over time, I try to give the animals to new homes, but it's easier to find people willing to take kittens than adult cats. The little ones go to families, and the adults stay. I have one old cat who has been with me from the beginning. I tried to tame her and keep her at home, but she can't live under a roof. She chose freedom and stayed on the plot. She sleeps in the basement, and I don't know what to do with her because no one wants to take her in. I also have one feral cat that I can't catch. I'm seriously considering buying a special trap cage for catching cats.
To oczywiście nie koniec. Średnio raz albo dwa razy w miesiącu pojawia się kolejny nowy kot. Idę do warsztatu, a tam dziki kocur. Idę do obory, znajduję dwa kolejne. Wchodzę do stodoły i znowu coś na mnie spogląda z kąta. Od roku dokarmiam całą tę bandę dzikusów i staram się je sterylizować. Nie ukrywam, że to mocno obciąża mój budżet. Portfel boli, ale serce bolałoby jeszcze bardziej, gdybym nic z tym nie robił. Z czasem staram się oddawać zwierzęta do nowych domów, ale łatwiej znaleźć chętnych na kocięta niż na dorosłe koty. Maluchy rozchodzą się do rodzin, a dorosłe zostają. Mam jedną starą kotkę, która jest ze mną od początku. Próbowałem ją oswoić i zatrzymać w domu, ale ona nie potrafi żyć pod dachem. Wybrała wolność i została na działce. Śpi w piwnicy, a ja nie wiem, co z nią zrobić, bo nikt nie chce jej przygarnąć. Mam też jednego dzikusa, którego nie potrafię złapać. Coraz poważniej myślę o kupnie specjalnej klatki-pułapki do łapania kotów.

In order to be able to help them systematically, I have set up a small fund. Every month, I contribute to it and invest in various financial instruments, and I use the profits to care for the cats. The most important thing is neutering and spaying, because that's the only way to break the cycle of births. I also spend a lot of my free time building insulated houses in the barn. Every now and then, I have to check if any of the strays have brought their young there. If I find kittens, I have to catch them and move them to a safer place, because rats sometimes prowl around the barn. All it takes is for the mother to leave for a moment and it becomes dangerous. That is why my boiler room is always open. It is an additional place where "homeless" cats can warm up, especially in winter.
Żeby móc im pomagać systematycznie, zrobiłem mały fundusz. Co miesiąc go zasilam i inwestuję w różne instrumenty finansowe, a zyski przeznaczam właśnie na opiekę nad kotami. Najważniejsze są kastracje i sterylizacje, bo to jedyny sposób, żeby przerwać spiralę kolejnych narodzin. Poświęcam też sporo wolnego czasu na budowę ocieplonych domków w oborze. Co jakiś czas muszę sprawdzać, czy któryś z dzikusów nie przyniósł tam młodych. Jeśli znajdę kocięta, muszę je złapać i przenieść w bezpieczniejsze miejsce, bo w oborze zdarza się, że grasują szczury. Wystarczy, że matka odejdzie na chwilę i już robi się niebezpiecznie. Dlatego też moja kotłownia jest zawsze otwarta. To dodatkowe miejsce, gdzie "bezdomniaki" mogą się ogrzać, a szczególnie zimą.

Looking at the bigger picture, cats are an alien species in our natural environment. They arrived in Poland and caused a lot of damage. They contributed to the decline in the population of many bird species, especially those that nest on the ground. In addition, they interbreed with European wildcats, and as a result, it is said that there are practically no pure wildcats left. They therefore have a negative impact on the environment, and the problem is not just that ‘the cat has no home’. That is why I am not convinced by people who say "let nature live its own life". It is definitely too late for that.
Patrząc szerzej, kot w naszej przyrodzie to gatunek obcy. Napłynął do Polski i wyrządził sporo szkód. Przyczynił się do zmniejszenia populacji wielu gatunków ptaków, zwłaszcza tych gniazdujących na ziemi. W dodatku miesza się z żbikiem europejskim i w efekcie mówi się, że czystych żbików praktycznie już nie ma. Na środowisko wywiera więc negatywny wpływ i problem nie sprowadza się tylko do tego, że „kotek nie ma domu". Dlatego też słowa ludzi, że "dajmy żyć naturze swoim życiem" do mnie nie przemawiają. Jest na to już zdecydowanie za późno.

What are the options for combating cat homelessness? There are several. The first is TNR, or Trap-Neuter-Return. It involves catching, neutering and releasing cats back to the same place. It is a humane method that works very well in many countries. There is no such nationwide programme in Poland, but in my opinion it could be a good solution. The second option is information campaigns. Education always helps, although I feel that its effectiveness is limited. People need to be taught responsibility, but simply handing out leaflets will not stop the wave of abandonment. The third option, which is sometimes mentioned, is culling. Statistically, it looks like a quick solution to the problem, but for me, there is no humanity in it. The cat is only guilty of being alive. The person who abandoned it and did not have it neutered is guilty.
Jakie są opcje walki z bezdomnością kotów? Jest ich kilka. Pierwsza to TNR, czyli Trap-Neuter-Return. Polega na łapaniu, sterylizacji i wypuszczaniu z powrotem w to samo miejsce. To humanitarna metoda, która w wielu krajach działa bardzo dobrze. W Polsce nie ma takiego programu w skali ogólnokrajowej, ale moim zdaniem mogłaby być dobrym rozwiązaniem. Druga opcja to akcje informacyjne. Edukacja zawsze coś daje, choć mam wrażenie, że jej skuteczność jest ograniczona. Ludzi trzeba uczyć odpowiedzialności, ale samo rozdawanie ulotek nie zatrzyma fali porzuceń. Trzecia opcja, o której czasem się mówi, to odstrzał. Dla statystyk wygląda to jak szybkie rozwiązanie problemu, ale dla mnie nie ma w tym człowieczeństwa. Kot jest winny tyle, że żyje. Winny jest człowiek, który go porzucił i nie zadbał o sterylizację.

That is why I am curious about how different countries deal with this problem. Has anyone managed to introduce an effective programme that actually works in the long run? What is the situation in places where the authorities treat cats as an invasive species? Are there countries that have built a real care system, rather than just putting out fires with ad hoc measures? I decided to explore this topic and write about it in English. because the problem is not limited to Poland. It is a global problem.
Dlatego właśnie ciekawi mnie, jak różne państwa radzą sobie z tym problemem. Czy gdzieś udało się wprowadzić skuteczny program, który faktycznie działa na dłuższą metę? Jak wygląda to w miejscach, gdzie władze traktują koty jako gatunek inwazyjny? Czy są kraje, które zbudowały realny system opieki, a nie tylko gaszą pożary doraźnymi akcjami? Postanowiłem zgłębić ten temat i napisać o nim także w języku angielskim.

About your question, there is no animal well fare in Greece, there are some from the state barely working, some volunteers who do their best but they animals are really so many!

It's not good to hear that. In Poland, at least many municipalities have programmes offering free or semi-free treatments. Unfortunately, they are not available everywhere and are still only a half-measure, as they do not solve the whole problem.
If these programs were led by people who cared about animals, that would make a big difference.
