World struggle for the strongest beer.

in BEER4 years ago

You asked for more interest in beer - hold on. One of the most interesting topics in the history of the beer revolution.

The Brewers' War broke out in 2008. There was a struggle over which brewery would create the strongest beer in the world. Since most brewer's yeast cannot survive and ferment beer at high strength levels, brewers have had to be creative and come up with ways to bring beer to extreme strength levels by freezing water. Here is the chronology of these events:

Schorschbock 31%
December 2008

Schorschbräu, a German brewery known for its wheat beer and sides, is designed to produce the strongest beer in the world. In December 2008, they released the Schorschbock 31, 31% of the ABV icebox. The beer was only a few percent stronger than any beer ever made.

Nuclear Tactical Penguin (BrewDog)
November 2009

Martin Dickie and James Watt, crazy geniuses at Scottish BrewDog, decided they wanted to break the record and released the Imperial Stout Tactical Nuclear Penguin, which scored 32% of ABV, stealing the Schorschbräu title. The beer was aged in oak barrels for more than a year and then stored at a low temperature to raise the percentage of alcohol.

Schorschbock 40%
December 2009

Although a small Italian brewery called Revelation Cat was trying to enter the arms race with a 35 percent beer called Freeze The Penguin around this time, in late 2009 the battle to create the world's strongest beer was a race for two breweries. Not happy that their champion was overthrown, Schorschbräu released an edited version of his Schorschbock, which came out at 40% ABV.

Sink the Bismarck
February 2010

BrewDog has released a 41% version of the beer called Sink the Bismarck. The name clearly slapped the face of the German brewery.

Schorschbock 43%
May 2010

Not ready to give up without a fight, Schorschbräu raised the alcohol content in their Schorschbock to 43% to regain the title belt.

End of History
July 22, 2010

Thanks to one of the most unique beers ever sold, BrewDog returned to the crown with "The End of History". 55% of ABV cost over $ 1,000 per bottle and was dressed in real stuffed squirrels.

Start the Future
July 29, 2010

Just a week after BrewDog announced "The End of History," Brouwerij 't Koelschip released "Start the Future," which came out on 60% of ABV. Although all the beers on this list are far from traditional, it seems to break the rules completely. It is actually combined with whiskey to achieve high levels of alcohol, and is therefore not often considered a contender for the crown.

Schorschbock 57%
October 2011

BrewDog called it the day of the end of history, and Schorschbräu made every effort to claim the title. The coronation opus Schorschbock 57 finis had a limited edition of 57.5% ABV.

Armageddon
November 2012

Brewmeister, another Scottish brewery, produced a beer called Armageddon 65% ABV, making it the strongest beer at the time. Many say that beer is not really close to the 65% claimed by the brewery. He has since been removed from the Brewmeister line.

Snake venom
October 2013

Brewmeister is back with a beer that has a much more pronounced alcoholic aroma. In October 2013, the brewery released Snake Venom. It is said that beer makes up 67.5% of ABV and is currently the strongest in the world.

but do any of them taste any good? The strongest beer I've had is Utopias by Samuel Adams which comes in at a paltry 28% - and it was amazing (in small doses)

Great info. Who knew they could go that high. I would love know what they all taste and feel like.
