Hello, esteemed Beer community! Welcome to my #BeerSaturday Challenge, week 440. My esteemed friend @seckorama's post inspired me to participate in this week's challenge with a beer that has recently been relaunched after more than 30 years of absence: Cardenal Beer. But first, as is customary each #BeerSaturday week, I'd like to invite @marabuzal to write a post in any language about beer with at least three images.
Rising from the Ashes
This beer is particularly special to me because it was the first beer I ever tasted as a child. When you try beer for the first time, it's something you never forget. The initial bitterness followed by that effervescent effect was an experience that can't be replicated, so it's etched in my memory. The origins of this beer date back to the 1960s, and it was owned by Cervecera Nacional C.A. At that time, the three major beer brands were Polar, Cervecera Nacional, and Regional, with Cervecera Nacional holding 15% of the market with its two main beer brands: Cardenal and Nacional.
Its peak popularity was reached throughout the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s. Cardenal, in particular, was the beer my godfather drank, who, interestingly enough, is a teacher. You could say I followed in his footsteps. It was through him that I tried my first beer, and it was this brand. Unfortunately, Cervecería Nacional didn't survive the last decade of the millennium and was bought by a foreign brewery. With the purchase, both the Nacional and Cardenal brands disappeared. However, this year Cervecería Regional acquired the Cardenal brand, relaunching it in September. It wasn't until last week that I was able to find it, and the feeling of seeing this brand on sale again was like the joy of someone reuniting with a family member after a long time.
Upon seeing it again, I didn't think twice. I bought it and immediately shared it with my Discord friends. Although we usually drink beer during the last week of each month, this time I made a necessary exception. I needed to relive the memories, the experiences, those fleeting moments I treasured so dearly. I opened the first beer and poured it into the mug. I was captivated by the intense golden color of this beer and also by how foamy it was; tasting it brought back memories of old times, when things were calmer and simpler.
Later, we poured ourselves a second glass of this wonderful beer to confirm my initial impressions, beyond the nostalgic feeling of seeing it back on the market. Essentially, this beer is a Munich/Heller-style lager with that characteristic deep golden color and a very creamy head. Its appearance reminded me of the Solera Kölsch that I had previously reviewed. Its presentation in a 250 mL bottle at a price of $1.20 is the point that seems most controversial to me about this beer; it seems too much for such a small volume of beer, but its 5% alcohol content is something I celebrate, since most national beers are around 4 and 4.5%.
Upon tasting it, the first thing you notice is the fine, creamy head, which gives it a very refreshing sensation, especially considering I live in the Caribbean. The first sips and impressions on the palate are of its strong character with that 5% alcohol content, but later I detected the subtle aroma of hops and malted barley. These are the characteristics I liked from the start, as it uniquely balances bitterness and freshness. My rating for this beer, trying to be as impartial as possible, is a solid 8.5/10. The Regional brewery achieved something that seemed impossible: to replicate almost exactly the aroma and flavor of the same beer that was once the benchmark brand of the defunct Cervecera Nacional.

The fact that Cervecería Regional made a serious effort to recognize the importance of this brand in the Venezuelan market and bring it back with the same flavor and freshness it once had is something that deserves to be highlighted and celebrated. Que tal apreciada comunidad de Beer! Les doy la bienvenida a mi #BeerSaturday Challenge en su semana 440. La publicación de mi estimado @seckorama me animó a participar en el challenge de esta semana con una cerveza que actualmente se ha relanzado después de más de 30 años de haber desaparecido, se trata de la Cerveza Cardenal. Pero antes y como es costumbre cada semana del #BeerSaturday, me gustaría invitar a @marabuzal a escribir un post en cualquier idioma sobre cerveza con al menos 3 imágenes.
Resurgiendo de las Cenizas
Esta cerveza es particularmente especial para mi porque fue la primera cerveza que pude probar de chico, cuando pruebas una cerveza por primera vez, es algo que nunca se olvida. El amargor al principio y después ese efecto burbujeante después fue una experiencia que no se repite, así que quedó marcada a fuego en mis recuerdos. El origen de esta cerveza se remonta a los años de 1960 y era propiedad de la Cervecera Nacional C. A. Para aquellos años las 3 grandes marcas de cerveza eran: Polar, Cervecera Nacional y Regional, siendo la Cervecera Nacional dueña del 15% del mercado con sus 2 marcas de cervezas principales: Cardenal y Nacional.
Su pico de popularidad se alcanzó a lo largo de toda la década de los años 80 y la primera mitad de los 90, particularmente la cerveza Cardenal era la que bebía mi padrino que curiosamente es docente, se puede decir que seguí sus pasos. Fue a través de él que probé mi primera cerveza y fue esta marca, lamentablemente Cervecera Nacional no logró sobrevivir a esa última década del milenio y fue comprada por una cervecera extranjera y con su compra tanto la marca Nacional como Cardenal desaparecieron. Sin embargo este año la cervecería Regional se hizo con la marca Cardenal, lanzándola nuevamente al mercado en septiembre de este año y no fue sino hasta la semana pasada que pude encontrarla y el sentimiento de ver nuevamente esta marca a la venta fue una alegría como la de alguien que se reencuentra con un familiar luego de mucho tiempo.
Al verla nuevamente, no lo pensé 2 veces, la compré e inmediatamente la compartí con mis amigos de discord y aunque solemos tomar cerveza la última semana de cada mes, esta vez hice una necesaria excepción, necesitaba revivir los recuerdos, las experiencias, aquellos momentos efímeros que atesoraba con gran cariño. Abrí la primera cerveza y la serví en el tarro. Estaba embelesado por el intenso color dorado de esta cerveza y también por lo espumosa que era, al probarla rememoré viejos tiempos, en el que las cosas eran más tranquilas y simples.
Posteriormente nos servimos in segundo tarro de esta maravillosa cerveza para confirmar mis impresiones gustativas más allá el factor nostálgico que me dio volver a ver esta cerveza en el mercado. Básicamente, esta cerveza es de tipo lager de estilo Múnich/Heller con ese característico color dorado intenso con una espuma muy cremosa, su aspecto me recordó a la Solera Kölsch que ya había reseñado anteriormente. Su presentación es de 250 mL a un precio de 1,2$ es el punto que me parece más controversial de esta cerveza, me parece demasiado por un volumen tan pequeño de cerveza pero su 5% de grado alcohólico es algo que celebro, ya que la mayoría de las cervezas nacionales están sobre los 4 y 4.5%.
Al saborearla, lo primero es degustar la fina y cremosa espuma que le confiere una sensación bastante refrescante considerando que vivo en el caribe, los primeros sorbos e impresiones en boca es su fuerte carácter con ese 5% de grado alcohólico pero posteriormente pude detectar el suave aroma a flor de lúpulo y cebada malteada. Estas son las características que me gustaron desde un principio, pues equilibra de forma única amargor y frescura. Mi nota para esta cerveza tratando de ser lo más imparcial posible es un sólido 8.5/10 la cervecería Regional logró algo que parecía imposible, replicar de forma casi exacta el aroma y sabor de la misma cerveza que alguna vez fue la marca de referencia de la extinta Cervecera Nacional.
Bien amigos, fue un gusto para mi compartir con ustedes estos recuerdos, estas remembranzas de una cerveza que marcó la forma de disfrutar de una buena cerveza décadas atrás y el que se haya hecho un esfuerzo serio por parte de la Cervecería Regional de reconocer el peso de esta marca en el mercado venezolano, traerla de nuevo, con el mismo sabor y frescura que tuvo anteriormente, es algo que merece ser destacado y celebrado. Excelente reseña de esta cerveza, hay algunas bebidas que vienen acompañadas de recuerdos y nostalgias y al ser tu primera experiencia en este mundo es lógico que le tengas especial cariño. ¡Salud!
