The city of Coimbra, located in the central region of Portugal, is heir to a brewing heritage. The history of beer in the city dates back to the 19th century, including the location of its manufacturing facilities. In 1855 a small beer factory was born and in 1891 another beer and carbonated soft drink factory appeared.
In 1924, the existing artisanal factories switched to industrial production, which led to the region turning to beer consumption. A decade later, the Sociedade Central de Cervejas was created, distinguishing itself for the quality of its beer – mainly for the excellent quality of Coimbra’s water.
Unfortunately, in 2002 it closed its doors. Since then, PRAXIS, however, has completed the recovery of the craft beer tradition in Coimbra. (I promise to make another publication soon with this new phase of manufacturing and the aim of maintaining the tradition)
Of the two most famous Coimbra beers, today I present Topázio. Topázio is a Pilsner-style beer, with 5.6% alcohol content, light golden in color and produced with 100% barley malt. According to Jaime Freitas, director of Hoppy House Brewing (start-up partner of Praxis), this beer is described "by its notes of malt and bread and a surprising residual sweetness that contrasts with the slight bitterness that remains in the mouth".
A cidade de Coimbra, situada na região centro de Portugal, é herdeira de um valioso património cervejeiro. A história da cerveja na cidade remonta ao século XIX, sendo que é incerto a localização das instalações do seu fabrico. Em 1855 nasce uma pequena fábrica de cerveja e em 1891 surge outra fábrica de cervejas e gasosas (refrigerantes).
Em 1924 as fábricas artesanais existentes passaram a produção industrial, o que levou a região render-se ao consumo de cerveja. Uma década depois foi constituída a Sociedade Central de Cervejas, distinguindo-se pela qualidade da sua cerveja – principalmente pela ótima qualidade da água de Coimbra.
Infelizmente em 2002 fechou portas. Desde então a PRAXIS, entretanto constituída, tem mantido a recuperação da tradição da cerveja artesanal em Coimbra. (Prometo em breve fazer outra publicação com esta nova fase de fabrico e objetivo de manter a tradição.)
Das duas cervejas de Coimbra mais famosas hoje apresento a Topázio. Topázio é uma cerveja do estilo Pilsner, com 5,6% de teor alcoólico, de cor dourada clara e é produzida com 100% malte cevada. Segundo Jaime Freitas, diretor da Hoppy House Brewing (start-up parceira da Praxis), esta cerveja é caracterizada "pelas notas de malte e pão e uma surpreendente doçura residual que contrasta com o ligeiro amargor que permanece na boca".
