It served as a safer alternative to the often-contaminated drinking water of the time. Does Black Choulette have anything in common with that historical drink? Only one thing: its color resembles a miner after a twelve-hour shift.

If you caught my previous post, you know that Brasserie La Choulette is one of the oldest breweries in the region. Established in Hordain in 1885 by Isly Dubois, it was part of a massive brewing boom. By the early 20th century, there were 243 breweries in the Valenciennes district alone! This incredible density was directly tied to the rapid expansion of coal mining.

In 1977, Alphonse Dhaussy took over the brewery, and a few years later, they began brewing their flagship amber ale—La Choulette. The name itself refers to a traditional local game from the Hainaut region, where a wooden ball (the choulette) is struck with a club resembling a mix between a hockey stick and a golf club.

What’s in a Name: Black Choulette

The name isn't exactly revolutionary. In France, a porter is often simply called a bière noire (black beer). The brewers took the English word "black," paired it with the brewery's name, and—voilà—the branding was done. Simple and direct.

I should start by saying: I absolutely love dark beers (Porters, Stouts, RIS), so my opinion might be slightly biased. However, inside this unassuming 330ml bottle lies something truly remarkable.

Upon pouring, the beer reveals a deep, almost impenetrable blackness with a slight ruby shimmer when held to the light. The delicate beige head lingers surprisingly long. The fruity-vanilla aroma promises a real treat.

This is a Stout/Porter style brew with distinct notes of smoked malt. The standout feature here is the Madagascar vanilla—you can really feel it working in the background, perfectly rounding out the flavors of coffee and dark chocolate. Don't let the 8% ABV intimidate you; the alcohol is expertly hidden by the brewers and is almost imperceptible during the tasting.

Summary: Brewing Solidary

While the Carrot IPA was a surprise hit of creativity, Black Choulette sticks strictly to the canons of its genre. There are no wild experiments here; just pure brewing craftsmanship. This is a choice for fans of the classics: smoke, coffee, vanilla, and dark cocoa in the background.

The Madagascar vanilla "does the job"—without it, the beer might have felt too harsh or ordinary. Instead, it gains a creaminess and a subtle sweetness on the finish that makes the second sip come naturally. While the Carotte IPA was a more unexpected and intriguing experience, Black Choulette is a reliable, battle-tested porter with real character.

Przy okazji wpisu o marchewkowym piwie wspomniałem o bière de mineur – słabym piwie, które miało gasić pragnienie górników ciężko pracujących w kopalniach okręgu Valenciennes. Stanowiło ono bezpieczniejszą alternatywę dla często skażonej wody pitnej. Czy coś łączy Black Choulette z tamtym trunkiem? Wyłącznie to, że kolor tego piwa przypomina górnika po dwunastogodzinnej szychcie.

Po przelaniu do szkła ukazuje się głęboka, niemal nieprzenikniona czerń z lekką rubinową poświatą pod światło. Beżowa, delikatna piana utrzymuje się zaskakująco długo. Aromat owocowo-waniliowy zapowiada prawdziwą ucztę.

To piwo w stylu stout/porter z wyraźnymi nutami wędzonego słodu. Kluczowym elementem jest tu wanilia z Madagaskaru – czuć, że pracuje w tle, idealnie zaokrąglając posmak kawy i gorzkiej czekolady. Mimo 8% alkoholu, procenty są wzorowo ukryte i niemal niewyczuwalne podczas degustacji.

Podsumowanie: Piwowarska solidność

O ile marchewkowa IPA potrafiła zaskoczyć kreatywnością, o tyle Black Choulette trzyma się sztywno kanonu gatunku. Tu nie ma eksperymentów, jest za to piwowarska solidność. To propozycja dla fanów klasyki: dym, kawa, wanilia i kakao w tle.

Wanilia z Madagaskaru „robi robotę” – bez niej piwo mogłoby być zbyt szorstkie lub pospolite. Dzięki niej zyskuje kremowość i delikatną słodycz na finiszu, która sprawia, że drugi łyk przychodzi naturalnie. Choć Carotte IPA była ciekawszym, bardziej nieoczekiwanym doświadczeniem, Black Choulette to pewny, sprawdzony porter z prawdziwym charakterem.
