People Like Us - The perfect protest beers

In a time where half the world seems to be rising up in protest for one thing or another, these 3 Danish craft beers from the People Like Us brewery felt like the perfect accompaniment to a weekend of marching. To be honest, much of the craft beer world is, in essence, a protest against the kind of mainstream, bland generic offerings that dominate the supermarket shelves.

However, the People Like Us brewery does more than just rage against the machine. It was created by brothers Lars and Jesper Carlsen, the former of whom spent his time as a mentor to people on the autism spectrum. Through that work, Lars began to realise that these unique individuals had a lot to offer the world but very often struggled to work in mainstream society.

The brothers therefore set about creating a company tailored specifically for autists to succeed and went about employing several people on the spectrum into key roles. By enjoying these beers you aren't only getting to feel good as a result of the mild inebriation, you'll also be contributing back to often misunderstood and underappreciated section of society

Pepper Spray

An IPA brewed with a hint of black pepper. It's a decent IPA in its own right but I was personally hoping that the pepper flavours would leave me looking like the picture on the can without the need to charge headlong into the local riot police. Instead, the pepper is somewhat drowned out by the malty undertones. Really nice colour when poured into the glass and the can is perhaps symbolic of quite a few of the images circulating on social media at the moment. Rating 7/10

Oats of Disobedience

Oatmeal Stout might not be to everyone's taste but for me it's a style that I am beginning to enjoy more and more. I mean what's not to like, it's basically breakfast in can with alcohol! This is a rich complex stout with flavours of burnt coffee and chocolate but with a very smooth feel in general. Love the name and the design of the can is pretty cool too. Rating 8/10

Tea Party

This cream ale has quite citrus and hoppy notes balanced out by a very smooth finish. At 6.5% ABV it has the highest alcohol content of the 3 I tried and as such is probably not your ideal session beer unless you really don't have to get up in the morning. To be honest, it wasn't really my cup of tea (pun intended)! Rating 6/10
