Beereview – "Baden Baden": Peach and Golden [ENG/ESP]

in BEERlast year (edited)

Greetings, beer community! I hope you're doing well.

For the past weekend's #beersaturday I bring a double review – better late than never, huh? – today I'm talking about two different types of beer from a famous Brazilian craft brewery called "Baden Baden". It's located in a small tourist town called Campos do Jordão – also known as the "Brazilian Switzerland" – in São Paulo state, Southeastern Brazil. However, the brewery's name comes from a spa town in Germany, called, of course, Baden-Baden – which means "The Baths in Baden", referring to the German state, Baden-Württemberg. Founded in 1999, Baden Baden was one of the first breweries to produce and popularize craft beers in Brazil.

¡Saludos, comunidad cervecera!

Well, this popularization worked out really well as the brewery became really famous all over the country – it's surely in the top 3 of the most famous craft breweries here – so it's very easy to find them in any market, anywhere – considering how big the country is.

While Baden Baden Golden has been on their menu for quite a long time, the other, Baden Baden Peach is their brand new bet – it was released in early July this year. Both are available in bottle or can, with the bottled ones being a bit more expensive. I paid around $11 BRL for the Golden and $12 BRL for the Peach one (approximately $ 2.13 and $2.32 USD, respectively).

Baden Baden Peach is a hefeweizen beer with a percentage of 4.9% ABV and 10 IBU. Its highlight is certainly the addition of concentrated peach juice after the fermentation process, which gives the beer remarkable extra sweetened flavors, besides the ones provided by the wheat itself. In the glass, it shows as a quite hazy liquid of amber color and forms a thick and creamy white foam of medium persistence. The peach aroma is the first one to stand out – sweet and juicy, so pleasing.

On the other hand, Baden Baden Golden is an american blonde ale – sometimes called just "golden ale" too – with 4.5% ABV and also 10 IBU. Like the first one, it's not a regular beer within its style because it has the addition of red berries, spices and cinnamon – more specifically, a lot of cinnamon – so when poured into a glass, the first thing one can notice from afar is, of course, the cinnamon smell. For being a blonde ale, its color turns to be a darker amber than the average ones of the style – also more than the Peach one. Its foam presents a reddish tone, but lasts less than the former.

As for the taste, both don't differ much from their aroma. The Peach beer is medium-bodied for the style, it has soft carbonation and leaves a creamy but yet refreshing mouthfeel due to the peach juice. Although the peach juice has a 100% artificial taste compared to its smell, it's still inviting to drink. Bubblegum hints appears in the aftertaste, together with yeasty and another fruit flavors – banana? – which I barely managed to feel because the peach taste outstands the most. For me, it's a high drinkable beer even though I'm not a big fan of peaches, but, seriously, I fell in love with this strange yet delicious weizen since the first gulp.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same about its cinnamon sister. The first impression was good, however, it turned out a bit cloying as I was drinking. The red berries are almost imperceptible, its taste is all about cinnamon with some stale bread hints. The alcohol is accentuated in the aftertaste combined with the spicy sensation given by the cinnamon. Baden Baden Golden would be better if it had less spicy taste and perhaps a more rich body – it's too light, too watered-down for a prominent set of flavors. Surely it's a beer of low drinkability, one of those that is only worth drinking once.

Sort:

The name caught my eye immediately as I know Baden-Baden and have been to Baden-Württemberg years ago. I'm not a beer fan, but always appreciate the good design and this looks cool. You took some nice shots!

I wonder if there's a local brewery there, in Germany, also called Baden-Baden, or something like that. Haha

Two things for me about this beer the sparkling and the size of the bottle lol.
I don't think I can finish a bottle of the beer it really look big I kept zooming to see the content volume but I think I didn't. In all a cup of 🍻 for our friends.

Well noted! Both bottles are 600 ml and they're not so sparkling since their body are more "robust". It's a kind of beer (specially the Golden one) to share with someone, 'cause you can get oversaturated easily. 😅

Peach and bubblegum hints in a !BEER don't appeal to me at all. Will not try this beer....
As for the Golden, I wouldn't say that cinnamon would attrackt me in a beer, but out of curiosity I'd try that one. A name to look out for, probably it gets also exported?....

"A name to look out for, probably it gets also exported?...."

Interesting, that's one thing I never stopped to think about, Brazilian beers being consumed around the world (it's always the opposite, we love European beers and sometimes a foreign one is cheaper than a local one here, weird 😅).
Well, considering Baden-Baden is super famous here, maybe they get them exported... I'm not sure. If you find them one day, let me know!

Will do, allthough I think it'll be easier to find in Portugal than here in Spain (apart from that on an island), but you never know! !BBH
