Beereview – "Hoegaarden" [ENG/ESP]

in BEER2 years ago (edited)

Hi there! How are you doing, beer lovers? I hope y'all doing well.

It's been a while since my last "beereview" but despite being away from hive lately, I surely haven't stopped drinking these days – so you guys can imagine how much content I have piled up inside thousands of PC folders. Anyway, for this amazing and warm #beersaturdayain't I too late, am I? – I bring a review about a classic and unique beer, consumed and loved all around the world, called "Hoegaarden". Named after the small village in Belgium with the same name, Hoegaarden follows to the letter the recipe of the traditional witbier (or "white beer"), which date back to the Middle Age, made and created by Belgian monks from Hoegaarden village.

¡Hola!

However, behind all these years of tradition, the beer from Hoegaarden carries a sad story that almost ended, let's say, tragically. After the World War Two, all breweries from the village were forced to close their doors – but luckily a guy decided to revive the tradition and, years after, he opened a brewery, this time called Hoegaarden itself, to honor the immortal recipe from the Hoegaarden village, and it worked more than well – can you imagine a world without this Belgian wonder? I can't.

Hoegaarden can be found easily everywhere in Brazil – since InBev bought the brewery some years after its "official opening" – for around $7 BRL the bottle ($1,33 USD approximately).

Yo no.

Forerunner of its style, Hoegaarden is a Belgian wheat beer with 4.9% ABV and 15 IBU. Unfiltered, it goes under an interesting process of bottle conditioning – which means the beer is fermented twice. In short, after the usual fermentation, extra yeast is added to the bottle in order to create carbonation, so Hoegaarden needs to be poured in the glass differently from other beers – after pouring 2/3 of the bottle, spin it gently so the extra yeasts can mix with the liquid left. Hoegaarden is fermented with coriander and Curaçao orange peels, which give it freshness and a special flavor.

Visually, Hoegaarden has an opaque golden yellow color and it's noticeably cloudy. Medium-bodied, it has a white consistent foam that lasts longer than it looks. A subtle citrusy aroma come together with a strong punch of wheat, reminiscent of bread crust. Both sweetness and bitterness are mild and well-balanced, however, the herbal/spicy flavor from the coriander is what stands out in the first sips – the citrus from the orange peels comes stronger in the aftertaste, leaving a slight acid and refreshing mouthfeel, which doesn't persist much due to its dry texture.

Everything is on point in this beer – from the spices combination to the rich wheat malt flavor – except its aroma, which could be more outstanding just like its taste. It has a medium to medium-high drinkability due to its high satiety – I can't handle drinking many bottles of Hoegaarden if I'm eating, for example. But among all the witbiers I've drunk so far, this one is my favorite.

It is a sad story but luckily there's always someone to save tradition and in this case too as the beer is still alive. You took some amazing photos by the way. Also I hope to see you more on Hive, engaging with the community as well :) What do you say? Can I count on you? 😀

Sad story with a happy ending, heh. I promise I'll be more active here from now on – specially because this month is my "hive bday", 1 year alternating between a bit active and totally away. Things need to change... 😵
Anyway, thanks for commenting!

Nice review and nice photos, congratulations and thank you very much also because this is one of my favorite beers. Hope to see you often on Hive!

Thank you and thank you!
It's also one of mine, but truth is, it's impossible not to love this little gem, heh. Well, as I said above, I need to be more active here indeed. 🙃

Welcome back @zombialien !
Hoegaarden is also my faourite witbier (even though since a few years ago Grimbergen started to make/export their witbier, I'd doubt - try it when you've got the possibility.
I don't really understand this paragraph:
Hoegaarden can be found easily everywhere in Brazil – since InBev bought the brewery some years after its "official opening" – for around $7 BRL the bottle ($1,33 USD approximately).
Where are you from?
I find it a bit strange that you mention Brasil but translate your text in Spanish...?...

Inbev is originally a Belgian company....
Anyway, I just wanted to pass and give you a !BEER for promoting this great Belgian beer!

Thank you @svanbo!
Hmm... Just took a note of your recommendation, I surely will buy Grimbergen if I find it here.
Well, about the Spanish translation... Yes, I'm from Brazil, but as I also want to reach out to the Hispanic community – which is huuuuge here – I like to translate my posts in Spanish, besides English. 😁

That's probably a good recommendation and something I'd need to try... Will consider to translate one or another post. But do you think in the #BEER community there are a lot of Spanish which don't understand English (enough to appreciate our posts)? !CTP

But do you think in the #BEER community there are a lot of Spanish which don't understand English (enough to appreciate our posts)?

Well, I actually haven't thought about it neither haha but as I prior said, Hispanic community here is huge so this can also be a way to attract them to the beer community... Who knows? 😁

You're right, the more people got attracted to the #BEER community, the better. Like this our !BEER posts get more attention. At the moment my most recent one, accidentially an article which brings an ode to a #Spanish Beer, doesn't perform well. It seems taht it just all depends on a few Hive whales if your post is performing well or not... Of course, we never know if we can find some whale in the Spanish community. Keep up the good work!
