RE: Magic: The Gathering—Fantastic Beasts

I'm definitely a Johnny when it comes to my MtG play style. One of my favorite creatures from back in the day was the D'Avenant Archers, a 1/2 White creature which you could tap to do one point of damage to any attacking or blocking creature. At first, I couldn't do much with the idea because they were the only creatures that really had this specialized ability. But I made a deck with four of them and four Rods of Ruin, just to mess around with the concept. Later, as the game expanded, I got new creatures I could toss in. Icatian Javelineers from Fallen Empires, which were 1-time use, were among the first. Later, the Heavy Ballista (which could tap to do 2 points to an attacking or blocking creature) showed up, so in that went. Crossbow Infantry replaced the Icatian Javelineers when they arrived. And so forth.

The whole concept became to create a deck that didn't permit anybody to attack anyone anywhere unless they received my permission, which is just hilarious in a multi-player game. It is absolutely not built to win, it's built to be an island in the middle of nowhere that nobody can get near. :)

That's one of the fun aspects of casual pauper: it encourages players to find weird interactions and try a deck without any of the cost associated with Modern or Vintage. I have a couple Icatian Javelineera, and I think I even have one of those archers, but not the rod of ruin to my recollection.
