Hive PH Pinoy Food Contest

Hello foodies! I hope you've already heard, but @hiveph is currently running a food contest where you can share your favorite Filipino food recipes. You can check out the official contest announcement here - Hive PH Pinoy Food Contest. The contest is on until Thursday, 11:59PM (PH time), so you have lots of time to join. This post is my unofficial entry to the contest.

As you know, I love to cook, try out new recipes, or try to make my own versions of great food that I get to try from restaurants.

Batangas Lomi

Lomi is egg noodle in thick soup. In some places, they add vegetables, but Batangas Lomi has only meat as garnishing. Now, please do not underestimate "only".

"Special Lomi" will have loads of toppings like chicharon (crispy pork rinds), kikiam, lumpiang shanghai, fried tofu, hard boiled eggs, pork liver, now you get the picture. It is served with soy sauce with chili and kalamansi on the side and boy, oh boy, eating this is extreme pleasure!

I hail from the province of Batangas and our lomi is one of the dishes that stands out, apart of course from the bulalo and kalderetang kambing.

Batangas Lomi on a Budget

For this contest, I want to share my version of Batangas Lomi on a budget.

Why "on a budget"?!

Why not? It's pandemic time... our resources are limited, and my pocket is not as deep these days. LOL.

Now, without further ado...

Ingredients:

  • 400 grams thick egg noodles
  • kikiam and/or squid balls
  • 1 small onion, julienned
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 cups of water (or broth)
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • cornstarch slurry.

Procedure:

  1. Heat oil in a small pot then saute onion and garlic until fragrant.
  2. Add the kikiam and/or squid balls, add oyster sauce, and cook until brown. Set aside.
  3. In the same pot, boil the water (broth is recommended for more flavor). Add the soy sauce.
  4. Add the egg noodles and boil for 5-10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper according to taste.
  5. Add the cornstarch slurry while stirring constantly to thicken the soup, then mix in the egg. Keep on stirring until the egg is cooked and incorporated into the soup.
  6. Serve hot in a bowl and add the kikiam toppings. Don't forget the soy sauce with chili and kalamansi!
Then take a nice picture, like you really spent a lot of effort cooking it. 😅😋

This recipe is good for 4-5 people. My kids can easily turn the pot over in one seating.

Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing this. Are you from Batangas?

Yup, loud and proud. 😁

Whereabouts in Batangas?

San Luis. ❤️

Looks expensive, @arrliinn, can't tell this was an on budget, this is sulit!

I'm a Pinoy too, so even this is already a full meal, I'll still pair this with rice ;)))

Oh yes, definitely on a budget as it was just a packet of egg noodles and half a packet of the kikiam balls. The rest are our pantry mainstays, ie garlic, onion, and toyo.

And this + rice! Bakit nga ba masarap sa kanin ang pansit. Carbs galore. 😂

That's called talent, most of the times we don't need expensive ingredients, just a bit of love for cooking, and it does wonders to foods we cook. 👩‍🍳
