Have you ever wondered what it is truly like to become a teacher ? ☺️
Beyond the textbooks and lecture there is a moment when everything you have learned comes to life.
For me, that moment was the Aral Program. As a future educator this wasn't just another requirement but it was also a chance to step into the classroom and discover if I truly had what it takes to be an effective teacher.
Every Friday, a group of us from the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) program would head to Central Elementary School in Naga,Cebu. Our mission was to run a reading and mathematics program for the students. My classmates and I, the BEED students were assigned to the reading program. We were full of excitement and a little bit of nerves.
Central Elementary School was so close to our college that we decided to walk. Our arms were full not just with big books made by our fourth-year seniors but also with a huge sense of purpose. As we walked, a mix of anticipation and doubt filled my mind."Can I really do this? Will I be a good teacher? What if I can't teach them to read?" These questions swirled in my head as we approached the principal's office.
We spent our waiting time preparing for the kids.We went over the big books also practicing our storytelling voices and even rehearsing some fun energizers to get the kids excited.
Soon, the kids started to arrive. They came from different grades and a bustling mix of personalities. Some were shy and quiet there is also others were energetic and loud, and a few were already roughhousing with their classmates. We knew we had to be strong and understanding,as we were trained to teach diverse groups of children. We reminded ourselves that patience was key.
I was assigned to the Grade 6 class with two of my classmates, Mary and MJ, and one of our seniors.I felt a small wave of relief because Grade 6 students are more mature, right? Not exactly. As soon as we started to go over our rules, chaos erupted. Some kids were crying because they were being bullied, others were pinching their classmates, and a few were asking to go to the bathroom or get a drink of water.I felt overwhelmed and didn't know how to handle the situation.Thankfully, one of our seniors stepped in to help. The kids settled down for a few minutes and only to get rowdy again.
I took a deep breath and decided to speak to them directly."You're not just kids anymore; you're teenagers now," I told them."You need to behave and settle down."This seemed to resonate and the group became a little more focused.
To start our program, so we divided the students into eight smaller groups.I was so surprised that most of the kids who came to my group already knew how to read and understand stories.I felt a huge wave of inspiration. In that moment, watching them learn I fell even more in love with my chosen profession.Teaching isn't easy but seeing a child grasp a new concept is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world. It felt like a small success that day, a confirmation that I was on the right path.
At the end of the day, we ended our program with a smile. The most memorable part for me was hearing the kids say,"Ma'am, see you next Friday ☺️ Thank you ☺️" Their words were simple but they meant the world to me. In that moment,I knew I had made a connection and had been an effective teacher to them.
This experience taught me that being a teacher isn't just about imparting knowledge but also it's about building relationships and understanding different personalities also having endless patience. It is about being flexible and ready to handle anything that comes your way.It is about finding joy in the small successes and being a positive influence on a child's life.
So, as I continue my journey to become an educator I will always remember my time with the Aral Program. It wasn't just a lesson in teaching but it was also a lesson in life.It showed me that the classroom isn't just a place for learning but also a place for growth also for both the student and the teacher.
