Preparing Our Afternoon Snack: Sweet Potato Suman (Budbud) in the Simplest Way

in Hive PHyesterday

Hello my dear Hivers of the @hiveph community. I hope you're all well and safe.

Today I will be sharing a snack I made for my family. I made a sweet potato suman (budbud).

The suman is made from a purple sweet potato my brother brought from their church member's farm.

My sister, Shane initiated to grate the sweet potatoes. I was happy about it because grating it manually is the most tiresome part of the preparation, haha.

The grater we have is made of a big tin can from the 'Today's fruit cocktail' can, hehe. It's our improvised grater for this kind of dishes. Most often we grate a cassava using this grater. My elder sister had this made back then when she was selling homemade kakanin. Her specialty is a cassava cake. So this grater is really useful.

So...after grating I added just a little sugar as the sweet potato is already tasty as it is. I don't want it to become too sweet because I'm planning to put something to it later for a sweeter taste, hehe.

After mixing it with sugar I went down to get some banana leaves which I will use to wrap the grated sweet potato since I'll be cooking suman. We call suman in bisaya 'budbud'. Budbud because the dish that will be cooked is going to be wrapped by a banana leaf.

Before wrapping the grated sweet potato, I removed the hard banana stalk and just got the leaves. I cut it too sizes that can accommodate the usual size of a suman. To make sure the leaves are cleaned, I boiled the banana leaves first then wipe it with a dry cloth.

I then started wrapping it. I made about 25 pieces of suman. The sweet potatoes are not that many so the finished product is not that much too.

I then put the wrapped sweet potato in the pan with water. I put a banana stalk so the budbud won't get soaked to too much water. Because budbud is cooked through steaming it.

I steamed it for about an hour and twenty minutes and it's done. I set it still in a casserole for about 30 minutes then prepared it for serving.

Some loved it just as it is but I on the other hand put something to make it sweeter. I got a condensed milk on top of it, haha! That's the surprise I was trying to tell you earlier.
