Delicious murder mystery directed by Rian Johnson with the whole ensemble clearly having a lot of fun along the way. Even manages to find time to explore social commentary on American meritocracy, Inheritance, and immigration.
The film starts out when Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), a renowned prolific crime novelist is found dead at his estate just after his birthday celebration. Given the suspicious nature of Harlan’s death, the detectives promptly arrive to question the family members, including the debonair Detective Benoit Blanc who is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. As expected, everyone is very quickly given both motive and opportunity, and then the breadcrumbs are slowly dropped, along with some nice red herrings and definitely took me away from guessing the full picture. But it’s not just the thrill of the guesswork – this has style, charm and some lovely humor. And of course, a fantastic cast who seem to have some great fun along the way. Perfectly balance of humor and suspense. Compelling narrative and crazy. It has a wonderful modern twist on classic murder mysteries – new, but with all hallmarks of an old- fashioned detective. The best thing about this murder mystery is it always keeps you guessing with a plot twist after a plot twist after a plot twist. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
