4 days ago the Sinulog celebration wrapped up with this peaceful, almost serene mass at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. The faith and devotion had a striking contrast to the world outside the Basilica, with the Mardi Gras, street dancing and parties going on.
Honestly, just being there felt warmth. Yes, we are naughty people. Yes, we like to party A LOT. But here we are, taking the time of introspection. Like I was exactly where I needed to be. Even with all the chaos of trying to find seats (spoiler: we didn’t at first) and the whole journey through traffic purgatory from our hometown. But still. Worth it.
The vibe that night? Surreal. I can't help but be reflective of my faith while living the world's pleasures (there was plenty of good food around, things to shop, events to go to). It was the kind of vibe that makes you forget for a second how sweaty and claustrophobic you feel crammed into
the Basilica entrance with way too many people... but still exhilarating and comforting.
Like, shared devotion. Reminding one another of our spiritual roots.
After mass, we did this whole dramatic “Fast and the Furious” escape on our motorcycle through SRP (which, let’s be real, is rarely not congested during Sinulog) to try and make it to the SM Seaside fireworks. And we actually made it! But not close enough to the venue because, surprise surprise, more traffic.
Still... those fireworks. I swear, every time I see them, I tell myself, "Jan, take a decent photo this year.” And then I just stand there like an awe-struck potato, too busy soaking it all in to even remember I have my camera on hand. I mean, is it just me, or are fireworks so much better when you’re not looking at them through your phone screen or lens?
It was just a great time with family. Like, one of those nights where you’re like, "Yeah, this. This is worth all the hassle." Already looking forward to next year... although next time, maybe we’ll leave for the Basilica earlier. Or bring foldable chairs. Or both. 😅
