Last November 27th, 2021, we held our 4th Hive PH Onboarding webinar. As it is the 4th, one should expect that everything that needs to be done in a webinar should have already been perfected, if not, at least at 95% perfection. I would say the webinar is a success, we were able to reach newbies, we were able to communicate with them the idea of Hive Power, its importance, and the importance of powering up their Hive tokens. All of those topics were discussed as meticulously as possible, but making sure we don't give information overload to make sure the newbies are not overwhelmed. All in all, the webinar itself, during the moment, everything looks as perfect as it could be.
In the background though, behind the screen, just like Murphy's law, everything that could possibly go wrong, will go wrong. And it did. I know some of these things might be trivial, but I have been castigating myself for all the slip-ups that happened. First of all, I wasn't able to record a video of the webinar. This part, I must admit, I always really forget but @tpkidkai is always there to remind me. But then he wasn't there because he needed to go to a much-needed time off. He's a first-time dad and I know how hard that could be so he deserves that break. I thought it's fine, I still was able to take a group photo of the attendees. But then, since I was on mobile data (we just moved to a new apartment and our internet connection hasn't been transferred to the new address yet) the group photo was not saved properly, it just gave me a broken link. I know, a backup of a backup should have been done. Oh well, that's life. Stuff like this happens, and we can't go on and on crying over spilled milk.
So here I am now, trying to recap everything that we discussed in the webinar for the benefit of those who were not able to attend.
What is Hive Power and Why is it important
Basically, your Hive Power is your staked Hive tokens. This is locked in on your account and can be withdrawn only after powering it down. The staked Hive tokens will be unstaked and converted into liquid Hive for 13 weeks. We did not discuss the topic of powering down because the main goal of this webinar is to discuss the importance of powering up.
Why is it important to have Hive Power on your wallet?
The first and most important reason of all is so that you could have Resource Credits. Your Hive power is like the fuel on your account, giving you the ability to create posts and leave comments for your interactions and engagement activities. The more Hive Power you have, the more activities you could do, the more posts you could make. Although I personally recommend the newbies to focus more on creating few quality posts and more quality engagement and interactions especially now that they are just starting up in the blockchain.
The next important role of Hive Power is for your curation. Each of us on Hive are creators and curators. We create contents, which will be upvoted (or not) depending on the content and reaction of your target readers. We also can upvote the contents of our fellow content creators. As discussed on the 2nd Hive PH Onboarding webinar, we also earn through our curation. This means that whenever we upvote a post, we receive a portion of the earnings on that post depending on the weight of our voting power. For us to be able to earn more on curation, we need to have a higher Hive Power. The math behind this is all too technical for me, to be honest, but simply put, I would say the bigger your upvote is, the bigger your curation earnings will be.
When you have a bigger Hive Power, you will have the option to delegate your HP either to help out a friend or to earn from the delegation. Delegation is more like letting someone else your Hive Power temporarily. To some, this is another way of earning some more from your Hive Power. There are community accounts like ocdb, curangel, and hivephilippines that offer earnings for your delegations.
Your Hive Power also lets you have a say on which Witnesses you would want to select. Witnesses act as a governing body that helps decide where the entire Hive community is steered to. Your Hive Power decides how many witnesses you can choose. Each account can select up to 30 witnesses.
You may take a look at the Proposals here. From the list of proposals, you may choose which one you want to support. Your Hive power gives you that voice in the community.
One more important role of your Hive Power in your Hiving journey is the ability to claim account creation tokens. If I am not mistaken, once you reach 1500 HP, you should be able to claim these tokens in your wallet. During my experimental stages, I tried creating an account by using account creation tokens. How to Power Up
Powering up is as simple as 1-2-3.
First, you need to have Hive tokens. If you don't have Hive tokens in your wallet but you have HBD, you can go ahead and convert your HBD. (This is not financial advice.) You can either convert the HBD in your wallet through the Convert to Hive option in Peakd or through the Market.
Once you have liquid Hive on your wallet, you may click on the drop-down menu right below your Hive. Click on Power-Up.
You will see a pop-up window with the power-up option. You may select a different account to power up. It is set to your own account as a default. Then enter the amount of hive you want to power up.
Hive Power Up Day
The main reason I chose to conduct a webinar about Hive Power last Saturday was because of the Power Up day to be held on the 1st of December. This is done monthly. You may check out this post for more details.
Additionally, @hiveph will also conduct a local Power Up day drive for Hive PH members. Take a look at the announcement post to learn more about this. I hope that every newbie joins this activity.

Conclusion
I truly hope that the webinars we conduct help out at least one newbie in their Hiving journey. The events and happenings in real life preceding this particular have not been as favorable as expected but I am optimistic and I believe that the effort was all worth it.
