Diseñado en Canvas / Autor: RFEACuba ha anunciado su equipo para el Campeonato Mundial de Atletismo a celebrarse en Budapest, Hungría del 19 al 27 de agosto. En definitiva, serán 21 los atletas de esta tierra que estarán representando a la Federación Cubana de Atletismo (FCA) en el principal evento del llamado deporte Rey este año.
El conjunto es lo que se esperaba y sus opciones son discretas. Como ya hemos dicho en varias oportunidades, el atletismo cubano atraviesa un proceso de reinvención que le condiciona a no pensar demasiado resultados rimbombantes en la arena internacional. Se trabaja, pero no podemos tapar el sol con un dedo.
Los líderes del staff, por sus resultados, son los triplistas. De manera general los cinco poseen acreditados registros que son suficientes para avanzar a la final y pelear allí por acceder a las medallas. Personalmente creo que las damas están más cerca de lograrlo que los hombres, pero la competencia dirá la última palabra porque hay que ganar con lo que se salte en Budapest. El aquí, y el ahora; ustedes saben.
Recuperar la senda de las medallas perdida en Oregón´22 es posible, como también era posible no haberla perdido allí. Todo es situacional.
Es también cierto que Leyanis Pérez llega mucho más madura y segura de sí misma que hace un año atrás, y luego de lo visto en San Salvador, tanto ella como Liadagmis Povea ilusionan. Lázaro Martínez es un saltador talla extra y este año se agenció marca personal de 17.51m, pero objetivamente tiene que lidiar con la presencia de Pedro Pichardo, a todas luces favorito y algunos otros con mejores prestaciones que él como Hugues Fabrice ZANGO o el sorprendente joven jamaicano Jaydon HIBBERT que se estiró hasta los 17.87m para convertirse en recordista mundial u20.
Cabe considerar también que Lazarito viene de una molestia en uno de sus pies por una mala pisada, y aunque desde la dirección del atletismo se hayan despejado todas las dudas sobre su estado de forma, la vida me ha demostrado que este es un tema que vale tomar en cuenta siempre.
El resto de los seleccionados tiene complejo llegar a un podio, aunque obviamente, sus metas personales son posibles y el hecho de hacer un buen mundial y superarse será motivo indiscutible de júbilo.
En ese grupo no solo aparecen novatos como la velocista Yunisleidys de la C. García, Ronald Mencía en el lanzamiento del martillo o Alejandro Parada, debutantes en mundiales de la categoría absoluta. Este último encargado además de mantener a Cuba en la convocatoria de una prueba gloriosa como lo ha sido el salto de longitud a través de los tiempos. Recordemos que Maykel Massó queda fuera del equipo por lesión.
Sino también experimentados como Rose Mary Almanza, que va a su sexto campeonato mundial, Zurian Hechavarría, Roxana Gómez, Luis Zayas y Silinda Gómez que tienen como primera meta rendir y superarse.
Las polémicas entorno a esta selección, más allá de los análisis sobre los resultados discretos que avalan el grupo, se han centrado en las ausencias de Sahily Diago (4x400) y Melany Matheus (lanzamiento del disco) así como la inclusión de Jocelyn Echazabal que es especialista en 100m con vallas como suplente del 4x400. Vayamos por partes:
La no presencia de Matheus y Diago corresponde a una decisión técnica consensuada con sus entrenadores para enfocar su preparación de cara a los Juegos Panamericanos de Santiago de Chile, según me dijo George Romero (Jefe Técnico de la Comisión Nacional) en reciente conversación telefónica. Razón que me confirmaron los preparadores Raúl Calderón y Francisco Ayala, quienes tiene bajo su tutela a Melany y Sahily, respectivamente. Correcta o no, merece respeto.
En el caso de Echazabal, que si ha hecho incursiones como parte del 4x100 donde también es suplente, llama especialmente la atención porque tiene apenas una incursión registrada en 400m, con tiempo de 59.8h. Su inclusión es circunstancial, una apuesta a que el universo no nos juegue en contra y no tenga que tomar parte. También existe cercanía en el horario de esta prueba y la final de los 800m para damas; si Rose avanza tendría aproximadamente 1 hora para recuperarse. Desde la dirección técnica me dicen que lo han tenido en cuenta, y que le es posible asumir el reto.
Precisamente la posta larga cubana es otra de las opciones del grupo para alcanzar instancias finales en suelo húngaro. Correrán con Hechavarría, Almanza, Veitía y Gómez, idéntica formación a la que la que las llevó a coronarse en el Mundial especializado de Silesia. Ya en Tokio 2021 estuvieron en la final, pero corriendo con Sahily en lugar de Roxana, mientras que en Oregón declinaron estar por decisión técnica.
Antes de cerrar quiero dejarle unas líneas al 4x100m que lució tan bonito en San Salvador. A ellas las he visto trabajar fuerte en el Estadio Panamericano y las he escuchado hablar con ganas y convicción. Es un evento que, además de talento, se suele decidir por la precisión de los cambios. Creo que nos podrían sorprender. ¡Ya veremos!
Dicho esto, Budapest asegura emociones. Hay grandes registros en disputa y estrellas listas para brillar. Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce con 36 años y por agigantar su enorme historia, Karsten Warholm, Armand Duplantis, Faith Kipyegon y Yulimar Rojas que compiten contra los límites del universo, u otros como Eriyon Knigthon y Noah Lyles con la misión de acercarse a Usain Bolt.
Hay también ausencias sonadas como la de Nafi Thiam, giros interesantes y regresos que emocionan como la inscripción de Sydney McLaughlin en los 400 metros planos, la reaparición de Wayde Van Niekerk en los 400m planos y la vuelta de Alison dos Santos para los 400m vallas luego de una lesión. También observamos alguna que otra “locura” como la de Shaunae Miller-Uibo que estará en los 400m luego de tener a su bebé a finales del reciente mes de abril o Siffan Hassan que parece que irá, otra vez, por tres distancias. En resumen: será un mundial bonito, con marcas de ensueño. No lo duden.
