Se ha dado comienzo a la instancia de los cuartos de final de la UEFA Champions League, en donde se lleva a cabo la eliminatoria que tengo muchas expectativas; me refiero al enfrentamiento entre FC Barcelona y Atlético de Madrid que, por casualidades del calendario futbolístico, se deberán enfrentar hasta en tres ocasiones casi de manera consecutiva. La primera fue por La Liga, donde en un encuentro muy disputado el Barça obtuvo una importante victoria para consolidar el liderato en dicha competición, pero después de tan exigente juego, era el momento de hacer frente a un encuentro que, en mi opinión, tiene mucha relevancia por el hecho de que ganar significa el mantenerse con vida en el máximo torneo de clubes en Europa.

The UEFA Champions League quarterfinals have kicked off, featuring a matchup I’m really looking forward to: the clash between FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid, which—due to the quirks of the soccer schedule—will see the two teams face off three times in quick succession. The first match was in La Liga, where, in a hard-fought contest, Barça secured a crucial victory to solidify their lead in the league. But after such a grueling game, it was time to face a match that, in my opinion, is of great importance because winning it means staying alive in Europe’s premier club tournament.
En la publicación que llamé "Round 1", en donde ofrecí mi punto de vista del primer enfrentamiento entre los dos clubes de La Liga, hice referencia a las preferencias de cada entrenador; me refiero a la manera de enfrentar ese primer round en donde era de esperar que Flick no iba a dar descanso a sus jugadores titulares teniendo una gran oportunidad para aumentar su ventaja en el liderato; esa decisión proveyó la oportunidad al Cholo de poder enfocarse en el doble partido contra el mismo rival, pero por la Champions, y por eso dio descanso a muchos de sus jugadores titulares, tanto en ataque como en defensa; justamente ese plan me hizo generar expectativas porque sé lo que puede generar el Atleti en esta instancia, lo cual me hizo catalogarlos de favoritos para pasar de ronda, ya que con un equipo enfocado en una sola prioridad, debería enfrentar a otro que está diezmado en la falta de jugadores importantes, así como el estado físico de los disponibles, pero también enfocado en revalidar su título de campeón en La Liga.

In the post I titled "Round 1", where I shared my take on the first matchup between the two La Liga clubs, I mentioned each coach’s preferences; I’m referring to how they approached that first round, where it was expected that Flick wouldn’t rest his starters given the great opportunity to extend his lead at the top of the table; that decision gave Cholo the chance to focus on the two-leg series against the same opponent, but in the Champions League, which is why he rested many of his starters, both in attack and defense; it was precisely that plan that raised my expectations because I know what Atleti is capable of at this stage, which led me to label them as favorites to advance, since a team focused on a single priority would be facing another that is decimated by the absence of key players—as well as the physical condition of those available—but is also focused on defending its La Liga title.
Justamente, el estado físico sería el gran protagonista de este encuentro; un equipo descansado y con mejor actitud y sacrificio obtuvo una muy importante victoria en el primer encuentro de los 4tos de final de la Champions League; el Atleti supo aprovechar las pocas oportunidades obtenidas y con eficacia (casi plena) ganó en su visita al Spotify Camp Nou por un maracador de 2 goles a 0; los dirigidos por Simeone supieron golpear en los momentos precisos lo cual generó frustración en un rival que lamentablemente (para ellos) fue todo lo contrario a los colchoneros, ya que de sus muchas ocasiones de gol no pudieron concretar ninguna lo cual es uno de los grandes fallos en el juego que ha presentado el Barça en muchos momentos de la temporada.

Indeed, physical condition was the key factor in this match; a well-rested team with a better attitude and greater determination secured a crucial victory in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals; Atleti capitalized on the few chances they created and, with near-perfect efficiency, won 2–0 in their visit to the Spotify Camp Nou; Simeone’s men struck at just the right moments, which frustrated an opponent that, unfortunately (for them), was the exact opposite of the Colchoneros, as they failed to convert any of their many scoring chances—a major flaw in Barça’s play that has plagued them at many points this season.
El equipo dirigido por Flick fue superado claramente por su rival y lamento que nuevamente el estado físico del equipo en esta etapa de la temporada tenga influencia negativa en la Champions League; el desgaste generado en el primer encuentro contra el Atleti y el contar con una plantilla tan corta se convierten en factores que empujan al Barça a estar cerca de la eliminación y molesta que tanto jugadores como preparadores físicos no puedan evitar estar en un momento tan pobre físicamente para enfrentar una etapa tan importante en la temporada. Las importantes bajas de Raphinha y de Jong, junto a la de Bernal, más el necesario cuidado de jugadores para no recaer en anteriores lesiones (ejemplo Pedri), más la inoperancia de Ferrán, Lewandoski y Rashford en la ofensiva, son elementos influyentes, pero nuevamente el equipo es víctima de la inexperiencia y el error defensivo de justamente su línea defensiva y así como ocurrió en dos competiciones anteriores, un defensor es expulsado; en esta ocasión fue nuevamente Cubarsí que así como ocurrió contra Benfica, el jugador se perderá no solo el partido de vuelta, sino un hipotético primer encuentro de semifinales; entonces, tanto las lesiones, el estado físico de los jugadores, la falta de eficacia y el muy evitable error en defensa por parte del Barça, al final se convirtió en un importante aliado para el otro club de Madrid.

Flick's team was clearly outplayed by their opponents, and he lamented that the team's physical condition at this stage of the season is once again having a negative impact on their Champions League campaign; The fatigue from the first match against Atleti and having such a thin roster are factors pushing Barça toward elimination, and it’s frustrating that neither the players nor the physical trainers can prevent the team from being in such poor physical shape to face such a crucial stage of the season. The significant absences of Raphinha and de Jong, along with Bernal’s, plus the need to manage players to prevent relapses of previous injuries (e.g., Pedri), and the ineffectiveness of Ferrán, Lewandowski, and Rashford on offense, are all contributing factors. But once again, the team falls victim to inexperience and defensive errors by its very own backline—just as happened in two previous competitions— a defender is sent off; on this occasion, it was once again Cubarsí, who, just as happened against Benfica, will miss not only the second leg but also a hypothetical first semifinal match; thus, injuries, the players’ physical condition, the lack of effectiveness, and Barça’s highly avoidable defensive error ultimately became a major advantage for the other Madrid club.
Existió otro factor influyente en el encuentro y fue la pobre actuación arbitral; nuevamente el FC Barcelona es perjudicado por la actuación tanto del árbitro principal como los del VAR y no lo digo por la expulsión de Cubarsí que cualquier otro árbitro pudo interpretar que el defensor culé realizó una falta siendo último hombre y por eso debió ser castigado con tarjeta roja, mi señalamiento con respecto al árbitro es lo permisivo con los jugadores del Atleti que realizaron faltas que en muchas ocasiones merecieron ser sancionadas con tarjeta amarilla y ninguno de ellos recibió amonestación, lo otro fue la jugada entre Musso y Pubill que debió ser señalada como mano dentro del área y posteriormente sancionar penal a favor del Barça, pero todo el grupo arbitral hizo caso omiso a cada una de esas jugadas, lo cual posiblemente pudo cambiar el destino del juego, en cambio, al no haber un trabajo correcto, eso abrió un panorama más que favorable para los visitantes, que se hicieron grandes a causa de la frustración de los locales, justamente lo que esperaba que no sucedería en este juego para así enfocarme en lo futbolístico. Lamentablemente, los árbitros se encargaron de dañar lo que debió ser en pleno una victoria muy merecida por el Atlético de Madrid, quien en este segundo round golpeó y dejó en mal estado a su gran rival.

There was another factor that influenced the match, and that was the poor refereeing; once again, FC Barcelona was disadvantaged by the performance of both the main referee and the VAR officials, and I’m not referring to Cubarsí’s ejection—any other referee could have interpreted that the Barça defender committed a foul as the last man and therefore deserved a red card— My criticism of the referee is his leniency toward the Atleti players who committed fouls that on many occasions deserved a yellow card, yet none of them received a caution. The other issue was the play between Musso and Pubill, which should have been called a handball inside the box and subsequently resulted in a penalty for Barça, but the entire refereeing crew ignored each of those plays, which could have potentially changed the outcome of the game. Instead, due to the poor officiating, this created a more than favorable situation for the visitors, who capitalized on the home team’s frustration—precisely what I had hoped would not happen in this game so that I could focus on the football itself. Unfortunately, the referees were responsible for spoiling what should have been a well-deserved victory for Atlético de Madrid, who in this second leg struck a blow and left their great rival in a bad state.
