Hello my dear friends, lovers of crafts and handmade jewelry, I hope you are all doing well and that your creativity is not lacking. This week I have experienced some somewhat turbulent times, but in the midst of this turbulent sea of circumstances, I was able to remain calm and clear-headed. So I want to share with you a bit of that balance, manifested through a beautiful piece carved from two different types of wood: the ancient Yin Yang symbol. The Yin Yang symbol represents the fundamental duality of everything in the universe. It is not an absolute opposition, but rather complementary and interdependent forces that exist in all things and phenomena. This is how, in the midst of chaos, we can maintain a bit of peace, which allows us to move forward. For this piece, I used epine and mahogany wood to achieve different colors. The process was short and simple, and here I show how I did it. I hope you like it and use it as an example in case you are encouraged to make your own. Let's get started!
Hola mis queridos amigos, amantes de las artesanías y de las joyas realizadas a mano, espero que todos se encuentren muy bien y que la creatividad no falte en ustedes. Esta semana he vivido algunos asuntos un poco convulsos pero en medio de ese agitado mar de circunstancias pude mantenerme sereno y con las ideas claras así que quiero compartir con ustedes un poco de ese equilibrio con ustedes, manifestado a través de una hermosa pieza tallada en dos tipos diferentes de madera, se trata del milenario símbolo de Yin Yang. El símbolo Yin Yang representa la dualidad fundamental de todo en el universo. No se trata de una oposición absoluta, sino de fuerzas complementarias e interdependientes que existen en todas las cosas y fenómenos. Es así como en medio de un caos podemos conservar un poco de paz, que nos permite salir adelante. Para esta pieza utilicé madera de pino y madera caoba a fin de lograr colores diferentes, el proceso fue breve y sencillo y aquí muestro como lo hice, espero les guste y lo tomen como ejemplo por si se animan a hacer el suyo propio, comencemos!

To make the piece, as I mentioned at the beginning of the post, I used two different types of wood: pine, which is a lighter shade, and mahogany, which is reddish. I cut a piece of pine a few millimeters thick, specifically 4 millimeters, from a larger piece, and also cut a small piece from the mahogany. Then, on a piece of paper, I draw the Yin Yang symbol, which I will use as a template for the wood.
Para hacer la pieza, tal como comenté en el inicio de la publicación utilicé dos tipos diferentes de madera, por un lado madera de pino que es de un tono más claro y por el otro lado madera caoba que es rojiza. Corto de una pieza más grande un trozo de pino de pocos milímetros de espesor, específicamente 4 milímetros, así también de la madera caoba extraigo una pieza pequeña. Después en una hoja de papel dibujo el símbolo de Yin Yang que utilizaré como plantilla para las maderas.

After drawing the Yin Yang symbol template, I cut it out and placed it on top of the pine wood. I chose this wood to be the base for the entire piece. After drawing, I cut off the excess wood on the sides and, using a box cutter, followed the circle I drew in pencil on the pine wood. I began cutting and cutting until I was left with just a circle.
Después de dibujar la plantilla del símbolo del Ying Yang recorto la plantilla y la coloco encima de la madera de pino, elegí esta madera para que sea la base de toda la pieza. Después de dibujar corté la madera que sobraba por los lados y con un cúter, seguidamente en el círculo que dibujé con lápiz sobre la madra de pino comencé a cortar y a cortar hasta que quedara solamente un círculo.

I start by sanding the wooden circle I made so that the surface is smooth and even. Then I cut the template I made in half, following the outline so that there are two halves. I use one of them to mark the circle I just finished. Now it's the mahogany's turn. I cut a small piece from the larger piece. This was a little more difficult because when I was cutting the wood, it split in another place, so I had to make a more careful cut. After that, with the other half of the template, I marked the space where it corresponded.
El círculo de madera que hice comienzo a lijarlo para que la superficie quede lisa y suave, después la plantilla que hice la corto por la mitad siguiendo el trazo de manera que queden dos mitades, una de ellas la utilizo para marcar el círculo que acabo de terminar. Ahora es el turno de la madera caoba, corto una pequeña pieza del trozo más grande, aquí me costó un poco más porque cuando estaba cortando la amdera, esta se partió por otra parte, por lo que debí hacer un corte más cuidadoso. Luego de eso con la otra mitad de la plantilla marqué el espacio que le correspondía.

Unlike the pine piece, I'm only going to carve half of the mahogany wood. You can see how I gradually shape it. In the small upper circle, what I do is extract that part until it becomes hollow.
Al contrario de la pieza de pino, la madera de caoba si la voy a tallar solo por la mitad, pueden observar como poco a poco le doy la forma, en el pequeño círculo superior lo que hago es extraer esa parte hasta que quede hueco.

Next, I join the two pieces together. I apply glue to the part I drew on the pine wood, and also to the mahogany piece, including the small circle. Once the glue is applied, I gradually join the pieces together until they are firmly fixed. Once both pieces are glued, I sand them all at the same time with sandpaper and finally give them a little gloss varnish, and that's it.
Seguidamente me queda unir ambas piezas, en la parte que dibujé sobre la amdera de pino coloco pegamento y también en la pieza de caoba, eso incluye tambien el pequño círculo, una vez puesto el pegamento voy uniendo las piezas poco a poco hasta que queden bien fijadas. Luego cuando ambas piezas estan ya pegadas las lijo todas al mismo tiempo con papel de lijar para finalmente darles un poco de barniz brillante y así quedaría finalizado.
What did you think of the final piece? It was a great experience, because I not only share a love and passion for working with my hands, but also an entire philosophy embedded in this small symbol. The Yin Yang philosophy offers a way of understanding the complexity of the universe and life, emphasizing unity within duality and the importance of balance and harmony in all aspects of existence. I think that if we heed these ideas and incorporate them into our experience, we can improve in many ways. We Westerners take Eastern ideas only as figurative ideas, never delving deeper. Qué les ha parecido el final del trabajo? Fue toda una gran experiencia, porque no solo comparto el amor y pasión por trabajar con las manos sino toda una filosfía en este pequeño símbolo. La filosofía del Yin Yang ofrece una forma de entender la complejidad del universo y la vida, enfatizando la unidad dentro de la dualidad y la importancia del equilibrio y la armonía en todos los aspectos de la existencia. Pienso que si atendemos a estas ideas y las incorporamos a nuestra experiencia podremos mejorar en muchos aspectos, nosotros los occidentales tomamos las ideas orientales únicamente para figurar, nunca profundizamos. You are definitely a master at what you do. I thought it was all carved in one piece. When I saw the tutorial I understood how you had done it and it makes sense because it is two different colored woods.

Yes, because you know that the Yin Yang symbol always appears black on one side and white on the other, so with a darker wood and a lighter one it would look more or less something similar.
