It has been a year since I made @pupiko and started living together. She became part of my family. At my partners company, she hosts a computer or a phone inside, sometimes candies at events, and my daughter and I enjoy making clothes for her, and we travel with her too. I sometimes wonder if someone else out there might enjoy having one too.
With that in mind, I have been wanting to make more friends for Pupiko (the Puppies, "Puppie" comes from a word "Puppe" that means doll in German language), but I was too scared to work with the woodturning machine. I kept thinking about why it scared me, and I realized it was the moment when the blade hits the spinning hard wood — the kickback, the vibration, the wood chips fly to my face. If a teacher is beside me, I can do it more calmly, and sometimes the blade slides in smoothly when I relax my hand. So maybe it is just lack of practice.
While looking for the reason to overcome this fear, I learned that a wood called Linde (European lime) is very easy to carve. The wood I used for Pupiko came from my teacher’s stock — very heavy, very hard, and the species unknown. So I ordered some Linde pieces to try.
When the Linde wood arrived and I carved it, it was surprisingly easy. I could even do it with a normal cutter knife. So I decided to try making mini Puppies. If everything goes well with the piece in the photo below, I can make two. Maybe Pupiko will become a mama soon 😁
Even though it is soft, once I get absorbed in carving and keep going, my right hand starts to hurt. So I decided to renew my Maker Space membership and try woodturning again. Linde is so soft that it carves smoothly by hand, so I am a bit worried it might crack or break on the lathe, but I must try once.
Another wood that seems easy to work with is Zirben (stone pine). I once bought shavings of it as pillow stuffing, and it smells like being in a forest. I ordered some Zirben blocks as well.
Pupiko is made from two parts, the head and the body. But now I am thinking it could also be fun to separate the hair, face, and body and play with different wood colors and scents.
Once I started thinking about splitting parts, it looks like a generative NFT character. Even though the crypto world is quiet lately or full of screams ... , how about Puppie NFT series that comes with a real Puppie? I could mint it on the Hive blockchain 😉

Pupikoさんを去年の今頃作って、一緒に暮らし始めて1年が経ちます。コンピューターを入れたり電話を入れたりしておしゃべりさせて、子供と私は洋服を作るのを楽しんで、あちこちに連れて行って、Pupikoさんとの生活を楽しんでいます。もしかすると、ほかにも楽しんでくれる人がいるのではないだろうか。
そんなこんなで、もっといっぱいPuppikoさんのお友達（Puppies）を作りたいなと思いつつ、木工旋盤という機械を使って木を削る作業が怖くて作れずにいました。長らくなんでだろうと考えていて、回転する硬い木に刃を当てて、刃が跳ね返されたり、木屑がガンガン飛んでくるところが怖いんだなと。先生がいれば比較的安心してできるし、力を抜いて刃を当てるとスルッと削れることもあるし、私の練習不足すればできるようになりそうですが、自然と対峙する戦いというかなんというか。
どうにかこの問題を克服したくて調べていると、ドイツでLindeと呼ばれているセイヨウシナノキは削りやすいということがわかりました。Pupikoに使った木は木工旋盤の先生のストックにあった木で、かなり重くて硬い木で、名称不明。物は試しということで、Lindeの木片を注文してみました。
届いたLindeの木片を削ってみると手でも削りやすい！普通のカッターナイフでもするする削れます。試しにミニPuppiesを作ってみることにしました。下の写真でうまくいくと2体できます。Pupikoがお母さんになる日も近いかもしれません。
柔らかいとはいえ、楽しくて黙々と削っていると、止まらなくなり右手が痛い 💦 ということで、市内のMaker Spaceの会員資格を更新して木工旋盤に再挑戦しようと思っています。Lindeは手でもスルッと削れるほどやわらかいので、木工旋盤で加工するときに割れたり折れたりしないかが心配ではありますが、まずはやってみよう。
加工しやすい木材といえば、Zirben（松）もよいようで、一度枕の中身として削りかすを買ったことがあって、森林にいるような良い香りがするんですよね。Zirbenの木片も注文してみました。
Pupikoさんは頭と胴体2つのパーツからできているのですが、髪、顔、胴を分けて、異なる木の色や匂いで遊んでもいいな・・・とも考え始めました。
あとは、クリプト全然盛り上がっていませんが、リアルPuppieがついてくるNFTなんてどうでしょう。Hiveブロックチェーンで発行しよう。
