I have taken the decision of only buying used hand planes. Why? I have not bought the first one that is good for anything. Let me tell you a story. I used to have an old hand plane. It was a Stanley Baily #5. It was great for many things. But it was so old that the screw of the knob split in the middle and then I cannot use it anymore. I tried getting a new one but it does not work. It came with a crooked sole, it has so many other details that I will not be able to fix. I wish I had machines to make my own planes out of wood and my own blades. But it is not like that.
However, I have had luck with my other tools. The saws, clamps, and other things needed for woodworking have always come in handy and of good quality. While going with my girlfriend to get some ink and other wood-staining products, I got these C clamps. They are 4-inch clamps. I have some clamps like this but not with this aperture. They will come in handy while getting things fixed and for other kinds of glue ups. And they are as sturdy as they come.
The last tool is this coping saw. I have one already. This one has a wider range of use. It also is capable of using other kinds of saws. Thinner ones that is. These thinner saws are the best choice for precision work. They will help me on my idea of making an instrument with a decorative rose in the sound hole. This is done cutting a piece of wood and fixing it to the sound hole on the instrument or rather by cutting the sound hole with the design in mind.
Some of my colleagues have told me there are options to buy tools from some relatives that did woodworking in the past. Those tools are gathering rust and might be put to good use in the hands of another woodworker. Hopefully, I will get some nice planes and some other clamps, plus other things. I will keep my fingers crossed. Wish me luck.
For the time being, scoring 2 out of 3 tools is a nice record. But I will not get any new hand planes unless I get them from a specialized store in another country. The bad part of that plan will be the shipping. I guess sending them by sea will help reduce the cost, but we will about it.
