One of the things I have been missing from this year is showing the new tools I have acquired because I have completed some jobs. The idea of getting a regular job has worked give the workshop some space and its own budget rather than just working from it.
I took the idea from some instagram stories by one of the Luthiers I admire. In that particular story, he got a question about how to manage finances when you are starting in the world of luthierie. His answer was direct to the point. You cannot earn any money if your only income is going to be the workshop. It might work for some people who have a lot of capital to start their venture. However, people need to build a reputation. And this last part takes too much time. It also takes time to make the workshop a source of income. His recommendation was keeping a job and focusing in learning and experimenting. Focus in the results of your jobs rather than taking lots of them. And thus, you learn, get better and build a reputation.
Since I have been teaching money seems to be available. It also works to take a few jobs here and there to keep my hands busy. That is why I now have a workbench. This is not the only thing I have bought since I started with the new job. More tools are now available. And that is one of the best parts of it. I got something I always wanted, an electrical sander. This will work wonders and help a lot in many tasks. All because I took the job I wanted to avoid.
It seems vexing that sometimes there are opportunities that we need to take yo start seeing some change in our lives. And that other job is going ok. So it might even be worth to explore the options given by teaching alongside the workshop.
