These days I have been invited to participate in a group exhibition at the Arturo Regueiro Art Gallery in this province of Pinar del Rio, Cuba,
La curaduría de esta muestra está orientada hacia el género del paisaje en todas sus acepciones que irán de seguro desde lo más tradicional, hasta lo más actual.
Pinar del Río tiene crédito sobrado de ser una de las regiones más fuertes en cuanto al paisajismo pictórico.
Por varios motivos hace algún tiempo no estaba muy activo en cuanto a la pintura, aunque en el área del dibujo sí he estado bastante continuo, sobre todo por mi participación en las diferentes comunidades de hive dónde casi siempre estoy ilustrando pacientemente los escritos.
The curatorship of this exhibition is oriented towards the landscape genre in all its meanings that will surely range from the most traditional to the most current.
Pinar del Rio has plenty of credit for being one of the strongest regions in terms of pictorial landscape painting.
For various reasons, some time ago I was not very active in painting, although in the area of drawing I have been quite continuous, especially for my participation in the different communities of hive where I am almost always patiently illustrating the writings.
Cómo siempre hago, acepte con beneplácito la invitación, y más allá del compromiso de una obra, voy a participar con dos.
Así que tome dos pedazos de lieenzo y dos batidores con esas mismas proporciones, los tense y con unas puntillas para el calzado que milagrosamente llegaron a mi poder, pues eso aquí, ni en los mejores centros espirituales se encuentran los puse bien estiraditos y listos para pintar.
As I always do, I accepted with pleasure the invitation, and beyond the commitment of one work, I am going to participate with two.
So I took two pieces of canvas and two beaters with the same proportions, I stretched them and with some shoe laces that miraculously came into my possession, because here, not even in the best spiritual centers are they found, I put them well stretched and ready to paint.
Solo les contaré del proceso de uno, pues los dos tienen como protagonista al mismo elemento,
pero con conceptos diferentes.
Pues el elemento discursivo es la palma real, tan típica de nuestro país y del trópico, pero que en Cuba tiene carácter simbólico muy elevado. Forma parte del escudo nacional y representa la hidalguía, virilidad y firmeza de los cubanos
I will only tell you about the process of one of them, since both have the same element as the protagonist,
but with different concepts.
The discursive element is the royal palm, so typical of our country and of the tropics, but which in Cuba has a very high symbolic character. It is part of the national coat of arms and represents the nobility, virility and firmness of Cubans.
Lo primero que hice fue extenderé varias capas de acrílico negro sobre el lienzo con un pincel número doce, pues esta pintura tiene un secado más rápido y con varias capas se logra un sellado de la superficie homogéneo.
Paso seguido con óleo blanco hice el trazado de lo que pretendía fuese el tronco de la palma y después, con tonos bajos de óleo verde, fui trazando las pencas(ramas) del penacho de la palmera. Ubicando también el lugar donde se unen estás al tronco a través de las «yaguas».
The first thing I did was to spread several coats of black acrylic on the canvas with a number twelve brush, as this paint dries faster and with several coats a homogeneous sealing of the surface is achieved.
Next, with white oil paint I traced what I intended to be the trunk of the palm tree and then, with low tones of green oil paint, I traced the palm tree's branches. Also locating the place where these are joined to the trunk through the "yaguas".
A mí el proceso de comenzar a pintar las pencas con sus hilachas siempre me resulta un poco aburrido y cansón, hasta que las ramas toman espesura y se van logrando con tonos de verdes, ocres y otros colores, la tridimensionalidad espinosa o peinada de las mismas.
La estética de las ramas depende de muchas condiciones medioambientales, sobre todo del aire y la luz. También del clima en que la planta se desarrolla, la especie y la edad.
El penacho de la palmera, en cualquier especie, es el elemento más expresivo, complementado por el tronco típico de cada familia.
I always find the process of starting to paint the stalks with their threads a bit boring and tiring, until the branches become thicker and with shades of green, ochre and other colors, the thorny or combed three-dimensionality of the branches is achieved.
The aesthetics of the branches depend on many environmental conditions, especially air and light. It also depends on the climate in which the plant develops, the species and age.
The plume of the palm, in any species, is the most expressive element, complemented by the typical trunk of each family.
Cómo ven, he ido trabajando alternativamente el penacho y el tronco de esta palma Real, que intencionalmente he degradado hacia la oscuridad del fondo, haciendo, que el plante quede sugerido. Y eso lo hago a propósito, pues ahí es donde tiene la obra su base conceptual que quizás ya ustedes vayan deduciendo por la combinación del fondo negro, la palma que es un código simbólico arraigado a nivel social, y el contexto y tiempo en que ha sido pintado el pequeño lienzo.
As you can see, I have been working alternatively on the plume and the trunk of this Royal palm, which I have intentionally degraded towards the darkness of the background, so that the plant is suggested. And I do this on purpose, because that is where the work has its conceptual basis, which you may already be able to deduce from the combination of the black background, the palm, which is a symbolic code rooted at a social level, and the context and time in which the small canvas was painted.
Al tronco le he ido aplicando colores, sienas y grises para ir conformando el volumen y las texturas y además del color local. Y también amarillo, ocre y otros tonos, más el blanco para obtener la luz.
Y hablando de sombras y luces; aquí la luz es quizás el protagonista principal de la escena, si tenemos en cuenta que la obra se titula“” El eterno milagro de la resurrección. Pues la luz brillante en la corteza casi en el cuello del árbol indica que viene de un lugar desconocido y enigmáticos, de un lugar de creación.
To the trunk I have been applying colors, siennas and grays to conform the volume and textures and in addition to the local color. And also yellow, ochre and other tones, plus white to obtain the light.
And speaking of shadows and lights; here the light is perhaps the main protagonist of the scene, if we take into account that the work is entitled "The eternal miracle of the resurrection". For the bright light on the bark almost at the neck of the tree indicates that it comes from an unknown and enigmatic place, from a place of creation.
Creo que así como está, la obra queda lista para cumplir mi compromiso con la institución que convoca a la exposición. Y de la otra obra con igual tema les hablaré en otro post.

No es casual que hallan tantos paisajistas en Pinar del Río, dado que nuestra región de occidente es beneficiada por los las aguas de los frentes frios, no siendo así en el centro y el oriente dónde llegan debilitados en su porción sur. De ahí la hermosura de nuestra campiña
