We are the generation watching our legends die, one by one, regardless of musical genre; little by little, they fade away. I believe there is no other figure in any genre as prominent as the maestro I've drawn, Willie Colon. Arranger and composer, he was one of the pillars upon which the Salsa genre relied for decades, becoming one of its architects. Of Hispanic parents but born in the United States, Willie Colon knew how to give Salsa an urban touch it lacked in other eras, bringing the spirit of the Bronx streets to the Hispanic experience, thus creating a unique fusion. He left this world a few weeks ago, and it had a profound impact on me. I created this drawing inspired by previous works on receipts, but here I've altered the original content to include the titles of his most memorable songs. Here is this tribute drawing for the Bad Boy of the Bronx.
Somos la generación que esta viendom morir a sus leyendas, una a una, sin importar el género musical poco a poco se van apagando. Creo que No existe en otro género una figura tan resaltante, como la del maestro que he dibujado, Willie Colon, arreglista y compósitor fue una de las columnas en las cuales el género de la Salsa se apoyó durante décadas, convirtiéndose en uno de sus artífices. De padres hispanos pero nacido en Estados Unidos, Willie colon supo darle a la salsa un toque urbano que no lo tuvo en otra época, llevando el espíritu de las calles de Bronx a la experiencia hispana, creando así una fusión única. Hace pocas semanas se fue de este mundo, y en mi ser causó un gran impacto, he realizado este dibujo tomando como inspiración trabajos anteriores sobre facturas de compra, pero aquí he alterado el contenido original para poner los títulos de sus canciones más memorables. Aquí te dejo con este dibujo homenaje para el Malo del Bronx.

On a simple sheet of paper, I designed a shopping receipt. On the left, I put some well-known songs, and on the right, random dollar amounts. At the top, I wrote: The Bad Guy from the Bronx, and at the bottom, FBI reports. I left the center blank so I could better draw the sketch of his face, which I did simply with a pencil, using his 70s era—his wild years—as a reference!
En una simple hoja de papel diseñé un factura de compra, puse al lado izquierda algunas canciones conocidas y al lado derecho puse cantidades de dolares aleatorias. En la parte superior puse la leyenda: El Malo del Bronx, y en la parte inferior, reseñas del FBI. Dejé el centro en blanco para poder dibujar mejor el boceto del rostro, el cual lo hice simplemente con lápiz, tomé como referencia su época de los años 70, sus años salvajes!

Once I finished positioning the face sketch in the center of the paper, I began drawing with the ballpoint pen. Here, I didn't focus on using intricate strokes but rather on using lines and filling in spaces. I wanted the drawing to look like stencil art, which I often enjoy using.
Una vez que terminé de ubicar el boceto del rostro en el centro del papel comencé a dibujar con el bolírgafo. Aquí no me enfoqué en usar trazos enredados sino utilizar lineas y regllenar espacios, quería que el dibujo luciera como un arte stencil, el cual me gusta mucho utilizar en otras oportunidades.

I really like this pen; it's very different from others I've used before. The tip, in particular, is very smooth, and I think the ink flows easily, so my lines don't smudge on the paper, which used to happen with other pens. Here you can see how I use lines for sketching and then fill in areas where needed, like parts of the beard and mustache.
Este bolígrafo me ha gustado mucho, es muy diferente a otros que utilizado antes, especialmente la punta es muy suave, creo que la tinta sale con fácilidad por lo que trazo no se accidenta en el papel, cosa que si me sucedía con otros. Aquí pueden ver como utilizo líneas para trazos y rellenar por completo en las zonas donde sea necesario, como parte de la barba y el bigote.

I continued adding ink to the edges of the head, especially for the hair and the shading on those sides and around the neck, which covers the barcode I added. I also added pen strokes to the top. As a final technique for the hair, I used markers, since the ink is darker and helps to create contrast and depth. And that's how it was finished.
Continuo agregando tinta por el área de los bordes de la cabeza, especialmente haciendo el cabello y también la sombra hacia esos lados y por la parte del cuello, el cual cubre el código de barras que puse. Así también en la parte superior voy agregando trazos con bolígrafo, un último recurso que utilicé para el cabello fue utilizar marcados, ya que la tinta de este es más oscura y sirve para dar contraste y profundidad, de esta manera quedó finalizado.
What did you think of the ending? I really liked this design because it fit his aesthetic of a salsa dancer from the wildest streets of New York, the bad boy of the Bronx. Along with Hector Lavoe, he immortalized songs that became anthems. His influence on Latin music was immense, so much so that his farewell was held at St. Patrick's Cathedral, to the sound of his inseparable trombone. I hope you enjoyed this tribute. ¿Qué les ha parecido el final? me gustó mucho este diseño ya que iba con su estética de salsero de las calles más salvajes de New York, el malo del Bronx, junto a Hector Lavoe inmortalizaron canciones que se convirtieron en himnos. Su influencia en la música latina fue demasiado grande, tran grande que su despedida fue hecha en la catedral de San Patricio, al sonido de su inseparable trombon. Espero que este homenaje haya sido de su agrado, nunca dejen de bailar, me despido hasta pronto.
